Lightroom is rotating my images. HELP

I did a search on Adobe's forum and found 2 other posts for questions with similar problems.

Background:
LR Cats are in a directory under "My Pictures". Once I am done working on an event I back the directory up to DVD's and move the directory to an external drive. Then when I open the old catalog in the new location I just locate the missing directory in thier new location. This may not be the best way of doing things but it seems to have been working just fine.

Then at the end of last week I open a catalog that I have been in as recently as 2 weeks ago and WHAT? All the vertical original images start rotating 9' degrees clockwise in the library in grid view. In the development view they are at 9' degrees but they look ok if not the current selected image. But the current selected image is turned 9' degrees and aspect ratio is as though it is still a vertical. Since a picture is worth a 1''' words.

So only vertical seem to be effected, they are rotated 9' degrees but in development the aspect ratio is still as though they are verticals and the only images that seem to be effected are those from my Fuji S5 Pro, and yes I have the last update.

If I snarl at this will it go away? Sorry - I don't know why, but the Fuji rotation bug pops up about every 6 months at me and I'm very tired of it.

Try forcing a read metadata from disk on it.

Oh and I forgot to not, these are all JPegs.

I tried that Melissa, but then all my adjustments go away. I can redo most of them easily, but I did do a good amount of split tone and other effects that would take a little longer. And since these were delivered to a client making the adjustments over could cause other problems. I do have copies of the exported deliverables, but not having a record of exactly how they were created doesn't make me happy.

Is the "bug" something you see in just LR or other places as well?

It's driving me craaaaaaazy.....Mine will randomly stretch my vertical pictures and make them horizontal....does anybody know how to fix this???

First - David, try writing then reading metadata. Are these Camera JPEG files, or exported JPEG files? If exported, from LR or elsewhere? (If they're exported, can I get one to see what's hiding in the metadata thats causing this problem? And a copy of the catalog they're in?)

Some insight into the issue. All images have a basic orientation - landscape(you all remember back when digital cameras didn't save rotation data, right?). When cameras started to save orientation data, its in the metadata on the file. In David's case, LR thinks that image needs to be rotated, and does so. Obviously by looking at it, the image does not need to rotated. Somewhere, the rotation data has been set on the image wrong - I just don't know where.

I use CS3 and LR. These were jpegs brought into LR after processing in CS3. I need to figure out how to run my actions and find replacement plugins so I can stop using the image processor in CS.

In this case the only thing I had done from openning the catalog one time to the next was moving it from one drive to another, then doing a locate missing directory. I did this on 4-5 catalogs that day and this one just started messing up, the rest were fine. And unfortunately I have rebuilt the catalog, not sure I have the backup any more either since I recreated it after I knew it was fixed.

Was really looking for the cause so it would be easier to fix or avoid the next time.

I'm also looking for the cause - like I said, I've got a good idea what's happening, but not why its happening.... I'll have to play around and see if I can repro.

As I mentioned earlier (and now I have updated my signature), I am having the same problem but only on some images. They are all jpg. All I did was import them from my memory card, into lightroom/onto my computer. It only affects my vertical images and it stretches them to horizontal (opposite of David's picture). I am definitely watching this thread for a solution because it has stalled some of my editing.

Katie - have you tried forcing a metadata read from your images? Select an image that is not reading the rotation data, and under the Library's Metadata menu, choose "Read Metadata from Files".

Well why may still be a mystery, but Melissa's idea combined with history at least has allowed me to get my changes back. Force reading the metadata shows up as a "Reset Settings" and stepping back to just before the reset for some reason does not return the image to its distorted state.
