Lightroom Import Problems

Hello,
I am recently having trouble importing photos in to Lightroom. Upon import a dialog box appears that says "could not copy a file to the requested location". I have not had this happen before, but it now happens everytime I import in to Lightroom. I had version 1.2, and I tried upgrading to the newest version 1.4.1, but I still get the same result. This first time this occured, it was with a card that had approximately 8' photos on it. I tried a new import with just 1 photo, and I still get the same message and the same result, no photos imported into Lightroom. Oddly enough the photos import into iPhoto just fine, but if I export them out of iPhoto, and try importing into Lightroom, I get the same Import result message. Please help!

I have a MacBook Pro w/ 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and 3gb 667 MHz DDr2 SDRAm. I use a Canon 5D and 24-1'5 lens, and Sandisk compact extreme IV cards

Rowan, not a Mac guy, but:

1: Do you have write access to the specific location where you're trying to copy the files?
2: Can you copy the files from the card to a hard-drive somewhere, and then import?
3: Are you copying/importing as CR2s or using the DNG conversion?

LR has problems with importing files direct from a card.
I do not use Mac but its best to use a card reader to import your files on to your HD then import into Lightroom. Hopefully it will be fixed in the next update.

Sorry, based on my experience I have to disagree with your general statement that LR has problems in this area. I have never (repeat... never) had a problem importing Canon images from CF cards into LR. And I'm talking tens of thousands of images. Windows, Mac, LR1.x, LR2.', CF cards that range from 512mb to 12GB, Lexar, Sandisk, using multiple readers... it doesn't matter... they all work fine. I honestly don't think there is anything to be fixed. Now importing directly from a camera via USB, that's another story from what I've read on the forums.

The OP might well have something else going on. Rowan, are you importing RAW, JPG or both? What are the settings in your import dialog? Although it probably doesn't matter, what reader are you using? I believe that iPhoto puts stuff where it wants to, so that may not be a valid comparison, but as Brad pointed out it might point to a permissions issue, or something else like that.

Personally, I've never had a single problem importing Canon or Oly from cards. (Only cameras I've used with LR)

Although, Denis is correct in noting that we've seen a number of problems reported here, and elsewhere, that 'seemed' to be caused by direct import from card, which were solved by copying to a local drive first. Most of those problems seemed related to a specific camera mfg'r, but I honestly don't remember which one well enough to libel them here.

I have been on the forum since inception and also on the Adobe Lightroom user forum since the beta days of LR.
So while I have no personal experience with Canon files, I use Olympus, I have seen so many posts with this problem that IMO it is a problem.
I have no doubt that some have no problems, but there are many that do have problems.
My advice would be to avoid using LR to copy files from your card. Get them to your HD and then import to LR.
I presently use Downloader Pro from Breeze Systems to copy files from a card reader, which I have used before LR even existed.
Maybe I will change when I stop seeing the problems others have.

Problem Solved!

Thanks for the responses. I ended up talking with Adobe directly, after a brief wait on hold. The Adobe help talked me through several options and eventually got both Lightroom working and restored and suggested that I had a "permissions" problem between my external hard drive and laptop. It appears that all systems are normal, but I am a little gun shy, as I depend heavily on Lightroom. Thanks again for the responses on this forum, it is appreciated!
