Lightroom Image Corruption - help!

I am working with Lightroom 1.4.1 on a Mac G4 with 1GB ram. My catalogue exists on a 5'' gig external hard disk, and the back-up catalogue on a separate 5'' gig disk. For some reason I am suddenly having a problem with image corruption. I will be working in a folder and one of the images with turn technicolor and pastel - sometimes it will correct itself, but most of the time it will end up having to be discarded. Needless to say, I'm afraid to work with my best images. The catalogue has 14''' plus images. When I open the back up catalogue, it, too, has the same images corrupted (of course, because I back-up each time I open). Could this be a hard disk issue? Has anyone had this problem? Help, please?

Sounds like the beginnings of hard disk trouble.

on another note, backing up on each open will fill your drive full of big catalogs quickly.

When you find a corrupt image, use the shortcut Command R (the apple key!) to show in Finder. See if the image is corrupt in Preview, or in another program before discarding.
It's also possible that previews may be corrupt, but that would be very rare.
