I keep getting this message even though I have tried to check the integrity of the catalog, tired reinstalling LR and creating a new catalog, tried moving the LR folder and referencing a backup catalog there--still no luck.

I did follow the other thread on this issue but the one thing I could not do was to delete the preferences file--could not find it on my machine. I did a search on my file system and cannot find it--can't even find that APPDATA folder in my own username or in the public documents. UPDATE--I did find the preferences file and changed the name of it in both users on the machine (my wife and mysef)

So when I moved the LR folder with all the catalog stuff in it and renamed the preferences file, LR opened up like it was a new installation with nothing in the library. But as soon as I tried to import one folder it shut down on me again.

Any other suggestions?

Running 1.4.1, windows vista

Any other suggestions?

I think the problem is importing

It seems to happen in folders with a lot of mixed raw/jpeg images. But it's not one particular folder. When I clean out LR and reinstall, everything works OK until I import a large folder, then it seemsto hang up and when I scroll down to look at previews it crashes.

I did have a session with Dell last night and they could find no problems with my machine. I have 3 gigs of memory and lots of hard drive space--and LR has been working fine until yesterday.

I am prepared to clean out everything and start from scratch if that's what it takes, as nothing in my library is that sacred. I can always recreate.

I am leaving town for 3 days and will not be able to look at this, but would like to revisit the thread when I get back and can try some other approaches. The one thing I did check is that on the folders I tried to import there were some PSD files. And also some old, very large tiff files from scans. Do you think either one of those could have corrupted the import process? I'll delete these files from the import folder and try that next week.

Thanks.

Problem still ocurring

I'm back to looking at this problem. I disabled Adobe Photo downloader, changed my Vista settings to disable Aero in case it was a memory problem, started with a new catalog and new preferences. I was able to import three or four folders but then it shut down again on a different folder. The folder that shut it down was no bigger than any other folder I imported, and there was a mixture of raw files and jpegs in both the folders that opened and the folders that didn't. What should my next step be?

I also tried disabling all startup programs other than windows stuff. Also tried creating a new user account. None of those worked--still shuts down.

Also looked at all my device drivers, video card updates (none needed), disc defragmentation, disc cleanup. I've done everything short of reformatting my disc and reinstalling Visat. I would rather have a root canal.

I have put my backup catalogs on a DVD and blew away every single file on my machine that has to do with Lightroom.

Before I reinstall Lightroom, does anyone have any suggestions on what else I can try?

I am a brand new user to this (or for that matter any such forum) but, here goes!

I have followed the various threads on this matter in the forum and although I am not sure that I am at the end of the most recent thread, this information may be of some use.

My experience was the same as that described by Tom Rosenbauer on 5-17-2''8 and as he had, I tried every one of the fixes suggested except downgrading to 1.3.

It was Tom's reference to RAW files that actually triggered my approach to find what (fingers crossed) appears to be a solution.

I seperated out the RAW files and imported only the .jpeg's (a lot of them, all very large) with no problem.

I hope this remains stable but, if I have trouble again - I'll be back!

Great forum and good advice - thanks everyone!

Chris, welcome to LR forums. Glad you found a (partial) solution.

Are you just not using the raw files? Are they important to you?

There have been scattered reports of LR 'not gracefully handling' some corrupted input files. And by that I mean crashing. :)

It's possible you had one or more corrupt raw files which were causing your problem. If they're important to you, the work around is to create a new catalog, and incrementally import the files, to enable you to identify the problem files. (Kind of like stomping around in a mine field, to find the mines.) If you don't need those files, then don't worry about it.

But, I'd encourage you to try to keep working with raw if you can because of the tremendous adavantages in processing flexibility.

Hi Brad,

Thanks for the speedy reply. Sorry for my reply almost 1 month later ! (bad news - I've been travellng, good news - with camera). I am absolutely committed to RAW however, on further investigation, it appears that any Sony RAW file kills Lightroom!

I know the Nikon & Canon lovers out there will say it serves me right for buying Sony but, I was a Minolta fan in the good ol' stays of steam and film cameras !

So, the next project is to try and find out if anyone has overcome this characteristic - first stop the Adobe Website !

Hi Brad,

Me again. Question asked and answered. Lightroom 2.' now includes Sony RAW format capability (and it works!).

Another $99 out of the piggy bank !
