Lightroom freezing when files are deleted?

Hey all, I was hoping someone could help me with this problem that just started an hour ago.

I have LR 2.5, and it has worked well for me until now! I am going through a series of RAW files and deleting images (not remove them , but actually delete them) and when I do this, it deletes the picture, but leaves the image up in the preview area! So the image that is actually highlighted at the bottom of the screen in the DEvelop section, and in the top left corner, is a different image from what I see in the preview. The deleted image stays there! I can zoom in and out on it, but I can't do any adjustments. But of course it prevents me from culling my images any further, since I can't see them large enough!

So what I have tried is closing and restarting LR, which gets rid of the frozen image but as soon as I delete another one it happens again. Then I tried optimizing LR, and then restarted everything including my mac. This worked for a bit and I was able to delete 4 or 5 images until it happened again. i hope I am explaining this clearly enough, and I did search the net for answers before posting here so that I wouldn't waste anybody's time

I am hoping that someone may be able to suggest a solution. Any help would be great!

Oh and I should also specify that this doesn't happen when I click "remove from lightroo" instead of delete, and my Trash is empty!

Mel, I used to see this occasionally on an old Windows XP system, but I never got to the bottom of it. I guess one thing left to try, reset Lr's preferences. Have a look at #4 in the following: Troubleshooting Steps

Thanks! I started working on a different set of images after letting it "rest" for a while. It seems to be working now....but should it happen again it would be wonderful to get to the bottom of it! I will try what you suggested, thankyou
