Lightroom for DAM - great features, dreadful performance!

I just decided to start organising my professional shoots, using the DAM features within lightroom - E.g. Keywords, Collections, Metadata etc.

I do like some of the features, and although not always self-explanatory, they are reasonably easy to get to grips with, with a bit of trial and error.

What I find as a negative though is the terrible performance I get trying to apply/edit metadata - for example having an entire shoot selected, which has say 1' sets and approx 15''-2''' images, then editing the metadata on the right-hand panels in the Library module - it sometimes interrupts me during typing a tag and stops and pauses, then appears to hang, then it starts trying to collect metadata (seen by the the progress slider appearing at the top-left of the window), all for no apparent reason as I am still trying to edit the metadata, and havent yet hit the Enter key as I'm tabbing through data fields. This app is still a little unpredictable in v1.4.1 which I'm using - I only hope v2 improves on this usability/performance! Looking at my PC spec you'd think I would have no performance issues, but the app still pauses, so applying metadata is a stop-start affair and a little frustrating at times.

For further background info - I now have my library stored on a separate disk (a raptor 1'k drive) to my images, so library database access should be as fast as lightening. I do also have XMP switched on permanently though as most of my images were editied in ACR, as have only recently made the move to Lightroom - I'm guessing this may impede performance when writing metadata - any comments on this?

Anyone got any suggestions to improve performance here, or any tips to allow a more successful DAM process which isn't so frustrating?

Thanks, Paul

Have you tried it with "Automatically write changes into XMP" unchecked? Many people report performance issues with it on, and the general recommendation seems to be running with it off, then use "Save metadata to file" on the metadata menu when you are ready to apply the updates.
