I have a folder with a few images in it. I also have a sub-folder with images in that. When I look at the top level folder in grid mode, I see the images in the sub-folder as well. Is this intended? Can I turn it off?

Lightroom Displays Images in Subfolders From Top Level

You can indeed turn it off. Look in the Library menu for 'Include Photos from SubItems' - you can turn it on or off as suits.
