Lightroom desaturating colour on Import

Hi,
Am shooting with new Nikon D3'' and colours on filmstrip when importing look as when shot but when Lightroom renders large preview colours seem to loose their punch. Am shooting with picture control set to Vivid +3 saturation. Monitor is callibrated and auto tone is turned off in preferences. The colour seems to loose vibrance and looks flat. Any help would be appreciated.

You have not stated but I believe you are refering to raw files. These in camera settings are private to Nikon and are not applied by LR which uses its own default or will apply an import preset if you create one for your camera. The initial image you see is the thumbnail jpg which your camera creates and places within the raw file.
The only camera settings that third party raw converters use are ISO, WB and exposure, the other settings like contrast, sharpening and other special tone settings like, vivid, portrait etc will only be useful if you are using the software provided by your camera manufacturer.

If you are shooting raw the good thing is you can do all the special adjustments after the shoot.

Set the ISO to suit the existing conditions, set the WB to auto (If necessary take a test shot using a netural gray card like "wibal" so you can make abosolute corrections afterwards), then concentrate on getting exposure, focus and composition correct.

The rest is a piece of cake using the raw converter of your choice.

It's pretty easy to set up a preset that will work well, then you apply it on import.
