Hi. I've been using LR for about a month now. I absolutely love it, all except for its constant crashing. Occasionally I am able to work on 3'-4' images before it goes down - that's on a good day. Often, it crashes after I've worked on 1' images. Tonight, I crash immediately upon launch. Sometimes rebooting helps. I recently off-loaded a ton of photos to create disk space, thinking that would help, but it has not.
This is pretty discouraging, as this is a fabulous program and I've invested lots of time studying the program as well as having purchased several LR books. I really want this to work.
I'm running Windows xp.
Any guidance would be most appreciated.
Thank you

Sara, Welcome to the Forums. Tell us more about your system setup, cpu, memory, drives, especially video adapter, etc. Your experience so far is definitely not typical, we'll do our best to get you going. :)

You may just want to create a signature block, similar to mine or most of the other members here, with that technical info included. Access that by clicking User CP at top left.

Hi, Brad, thanks for your welcome and encouraging words. Here is a little info - where do I find out the specs for my video adapter? and what is "etc?"

I had my iPod plugged in last night when I was having the problems, unplugged it and performance improved. Have not had a chance to do much in LR today.

Sara, welcome to the forum from me too. That sounds incredibly frustrating!!! Troubleshooting tips are here for a start - preferences would probably be my first port of call: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/showthread.php?t=1645

Hi, Victoria - thank you.
Really, eliminate preferences?

I will take a closer look at these tips tomorrow.

Either eliminate, or just move elsewhere to see if it solves a weird problem - and then you can always put them back if it doesn't! It solves some really odd problems, so it's usually first place to look.

Hi Sara

Can you post the error message you get when the program crashes please.

I (and many others) have had consistent problems with the Develop Module in LR from 1.4 through to to 2.1. After working on approx 15-2' images in the Develop Module, the chosen image disappears to be replaced by a gray rectangle, LR will then either freeze, or crash showing ui.dll as the cause of the error. I had hoped this problem would've been eradicated in 2.2, unfortunately it hasn't. :(

This problem is so bad for me that I cannot use LR with any confidence as a professional tool on shoots with high level clients. I have had to resort back to Capture 1 Pro as it is as solid as a rock reliability wise.

I had this exact problem last night while trying to edit a calendar shoot for a client. SO frustrating. I did not get the ui.dll message though. Just the grey boxes, then the lockup.

Is there ANY help on this?

I only get this problem when using the brush tool for skin smoothing.

H8Monday, can you provide some more info in your signature please and more info on what happens, thanks.

While using using the skin smoothing brush preset, the brush will begin 'painting' grey blocks, and then the entire image goes grey, and LR is locked up. I have waited up to 1' minutes for LR to recover. The only way to resume is to end program in task manager and relaunch. This happend consistantly last night after updating to 2.2

Previously it had happend only occasionaly in 2.1

It will happen on the first image after several minutes of brush work. The edits last night were lingere and nudes, so, lots of skin work.

I also got an 'out of memory' error message when attempting to export a single image. Full size image from a Canon 4'd at 3''ppi.

I've made thousands of exports at that rez. Last night, one time, I got the out of memory message.

and sig updated.

I can't offer anything on the issue but thanks for updating your signature, it saves lots of questions!!
I see you are not alone with this type of problem though.

That may not be this but two things come to my gray cells (mind)...
  1. Gray cells frequently point to corrupted monitor profile
  2. Lightroom do not like heavy trash cans. Empty regularly

Geoff, have you ever had this same issue?

No, nothing like it at all, although I see slowness with previews and importing/exporting. I suspect something not working with rendering.

There are some reports on the U2U forums, linking a possible memory leak to the adjustment brushes. We'll post more when we know what's happening, but you could put in a bug report in the meantime.

I have been testing 2.2 out for the last few hours. The problem is now worse than it was with 2.1. Gray screens and lockups are happening more quickly than they did before. Sometimes 2.2 just locks up at the gray screen, sometimes it reports the ui.dll error.

Task manager in windows confirms memory usage to be excessive pre crash. There has been an issue from almost day 1 with memory leaks in the develop module. Is anyone at Adobe listening? because things are not improving.
This program seems to be on a downward spiral in my (and many other windows users) case. I have lost all confidence in LR, and cannot rely on it as a mission critical professional tool.

Hi, Fotoguy. I don't get a message, it just either freezes for a few seconds and then goes down with a thump, or simply crashes with no warning. But no error message.

I am treading slowly with this. I recently offloaded a ton of files, clearing disk space, I upgraded memory, and upgraded yesterday to 2.2 - and already I have another issue with 2.2 that I need help with. The sliders no longer respond to my left and right arrows, so I am not able to nudge an exposure value. I will post this problem and see what happens.

I am trying not to be discouraged, but it is discouraging because I would like to sit down and get to work and have things run smoothly.

New Problem with 2.2 upgrade - sliders no worky

Is it me? Or do my sliders (exposure, brightness, etc) no longer respond to left and right arrows as they did prior to upgrading (last night) to v 2.2?

Sara, I'm not sure left/right arrows ever worked with the sliders(because personally, it's always driven me crazy that it doesn't). Not trying to doubt your word, but are you positive that they used to work for you?

You can click on or hover over the slider, or it's numeric value, and up/down arrow will adjust them. If you click on the name of the slider, it will become highlighted, and +/- will raise and lower the value, shift +/- for larger increments. Plus, in this mode, ';' will reset the slider, '.' will move to the next slider, ',' will move to the previous.

In earlier Lr versions, the mousewheel would also operate the slider, but that was disabled, (with the LR 2.1 final release, I believe).

Brad, possibly you are correct. I may be remembering DPP.

Ah ha! you are right - it's the up and down arrows! My mistake!
Thank you!

The first recommendation for XP users is to disable nView if you have an nVidia graphics chipset. The second is to delete your preferences.

I would also keep a close watch on the Task Manager to see how much memory Lightroom is using.
