Lightroom Version Number
15.2
Operating System
  1. macOS 15 Sequoia
I am running the latest version of Lightroom Classic 15.2 on Mac OS X Sequoia 15.7.4

They exported 550 photos using airdrop to the downloads folder

550 appeared in the downloads folder

I then imported all the photos in the downloads folder.

Lightroom imported 863 photos. Many, but not all, of the imported photoes are duplicates that have the number 2 added to the file name.

How did this happen?

Here's a sample of an imported photo and its duplicate.

Thanks.

Check the import settings at the top center of the dialog. When you import photos, you have a choice between only adding them to the catalog, or adding them to the catalog and moving or copying them at the same time. When you choose to copy the photos, but choose the same location as the destination, then this happens. Then system will add ‘-2’ to the file name because you can’t have two files with the same name in the same location.

The other question mark is, are they missing the metadata that helps to identify them as duplicates? If the capture time is missing, it's harder for LR to identify them. It's not usually an issue for photos from digital cameras, but you mentioned them being in the Downloads folder, and the file dimensions I can see there are unusual for a digital camera, so it's possible that some metadata (e.g. capture time) got stripped.
