Lightroom catalogues & Win7

Hello. First of all let me apologize for my English.

I keep all my LR catalogues in an external HD. Recently I update from Win XP 32 to Win 7 64. I re-installed Lightroom (2.6) without problems, but when I tried to open my catalogoues LR showed me the following message:

"LR cannot use the catalog named "2''9_RawDNG" because it is not writable and cannot be opened. This could be caused by incorrect permissions or because another LR application is using the catalog. You may try to correct the problem or you may select e different catalog."

Of course there is not another LR application, and I suppose I have all administrator permissions since I am the only user.

Hi and welcome!

First thing to do is check the read/write attributes of the catalog.....in Explorer, browse to find the filename of one of the catalogs, then right-click and select Properties....then check that there is NOT a checkmark in the Read-Only box in the Attribute section at the bottom of the Properties box. If it IS checked, click to uncheck and try LR again....

If that's the problem, great....if not we can start looking at the Permissions for the HD.

Welcome too.

When you installed Win7 it set permissions for your machine but not for external devices... You may have to take ownership of your external and all its subdirectories and files.

[/quote]This is especially true if the external device was previously used on another Windows machine wuth UAC.

Thanks everybody for helping!

In fact I discovered that despite I'm the only user on my PC, Win7 has created a higher level administrator (just for further security, it seems), which powers are demanded to perform some operations that the OS considers potentially dangerours.
In such cases, one has to launch LR rightclicking on it in the Start menu and choose on the appearing windows the option "execute as administrator" (well, more or less... in Italian is "esegui come amministratore").

Mauro, in that case, just try finding the application itself in the program files folder, right click, and try checking the 'run as administrator' checkbox in the Properties dialog. Last time I tried it with another program, setting it there was sticky.

[/quote]If your user is a standard user, you can log in with an administrator account and click <Control Panel><User Accounts> and change your standard user to an administrator. This will solve a lot of your problems. If you are new to Vista or Win 7, you are probably just beginning to experience the higher level of security native to this now POSIX compliant OS.
