Lightroom Classic version: 7.3.1 [ 1167660 ]
Operating System
  1. macOS 10.13 High Sierra
On May 4, 2018 my LR catalog size immediately jumped from 1.1GB to 2.7GB. I noticed because my backup directory show this jump in the history of file sizes.

I am using MacOS High Sierra 10.13.5 and LR Classic CC 7.3.1 on a mid 2017 MacBook Pro with 2TB SSD and 16GB RAM, an Intel HD 630 and a discrete Radeon Pro 560.

I have about 210,000 photos & Videos in my library. It takes 5-10 minutes to optimize/verify which I do almost every time I exit.

There was no appreciable addition of photos at this time.

Was this due to the April 2018 LR update?

Thanks for your assistance!

If it's catalog backups that you're looking at, be aware that these are no longer zipped w.e.f. 7.3.1. Hopefully this is a temporary issue, which will be fixed in a later update. But it would certainly explain the apparent increase in the overall size of your individual catalog backup folders.

Can I ask why you are doing this? Unless you are adding thousands of images and then making thousands and thousands of adjustments and changes there is unlikely to be any degradation in the catalog optimization in this time. It would be like defragmenting a hard drive every day - a waste of time and effort.
