Lightroom Can't Read Photo

I took about 8' .NEF photos with my Nikon D8' the other day. All but one imported properly into Lightroom. The remaining one imports, it shows a thumbnail, and above the thumbnail is a triangle with an exclamation point inside, and when I hold the mouse over the triangle, I get the message "Lightroom has encountered a problem reading this photo". I cannot change the metadata for this photo in Lightroom, and the Develop module refuses to launch for this photo.

Darn!

What to do? I tried my other Adobe products (Photoshop Elements and DNG Converter) and ran into the same problem.

Then I opened the file in Irfanview, it can not only read the photo, but it also reads the EXIF data, and can save the file as a .tif.

Does anyone have an explanation? I'd still rather have the .NEF if it can be salvaged ... it is smaller than the .tif and the .nef contains the EXIF while the .tif does not. Can this be done, or am I stuck with the .tif?

You don't still happen to have a copy of that file on the card, do you? If so, I'd try again.

First thought would be that it's unsupported file format, but I thought the D8' was already supported in LR2.

I feel rather lucky that Irfanview can let me salvage the photo, but still surprised that Adobe products cannot.

Does IrfanView give you the same number of pixels than those images already imported? I not, probably that IrfanView is just looking at the embedded JPG "Preview".

The problem photo shows up at the same number of pixels as the other .nef photos. They are all 3872x2592.

I would bet that specific file is corrupt. How does the file look in Irfanview? Does it look raw, or does it look more like the in-camera JPG processing? Have you looked at any of the 'successful' NEFs with Irfanview? How do they compare?

If I open the problem .nef in IrfanView, it looks to me like a .nef and not a .jpg to me. Color saturation is somewhat lower than what I would expect from a .jpg.

This is not just a visual observation ... in Irfanview, the problem .nef has EXIF that clearly states Image Quality: RAW.

Exiftool shows the problem .nef image has an EXIF that looks just like other good .nef images, but unlike .jpg from the same camera.

One last grasping at straws. Do you have the standalone Adobe DNG converter handy?

Find it [COLOR=#''''ff]here.[/COLOR].

See if you can convert the problem NEF to DNG, and try to import that.

For a Nikon, that doesn't tell us anything. NEF files include full-size embedded JPEGs, so we can't infer anything from the pixel dimensions. Good thought though, Denis...

I also suspect a corrupt file, which is why I was hoping the original was still available on the card.

Okay, diagnosis seems to be corrupt file.

Yes, the original is still on the memory card, but I've tried about 5 different times to import it (and yes, I tried to convert to DNG, didn't work either).

If I upload it to a web server, would one of you fine folks see if you can get it to import?

Sure, though it sounds like it's probably corrupt on the card too, unfortunately... If so (and we can try to help prove that), then your best bet may be to extract the full-size basic-quality JPEG out of the raw file and work with that, if that's not corrupt too.

(Note: last time I tried this, some people using IE but not Firefox reported the file downloaded as a .tif, if that happens rename it to .nef)

I get the same error as you with LR2.1RC. With CS4/ACR I get 'unexpected end of file' can't open.

With XnView, I get a render showing corruption at the bottom of the image.
