Hi Everybody,

My name is Christian, I am new to this forum.

Nice to be here.

I run into a problem today. I am using Lightroom 64bits 2.4 and Photoshop 64 in a Windows Vista 64 bits core. In lightroom I have my external editor settings set to edit as a psd file in photoshop, but when a click with right mouse button phothoshop cs4 open the document with a jpeg extension instead psd file.... I have reinstaled LR and did not solve.

Someone has passed by something like that ?

I would appreciate your help, I can't live without LR :-P

Thanks in advance,

Christian

Hi Christian, welcome aboard.... I think that i the first time I have heard of that problem. What happens if you select edit as a TIF instead. (TIF is actually the preferred method these days anyway)

If it is a JPG to start with in Lightroom, and if you choose Edit a copy with Lightroom adjustments when sending to Photoshop, then you won't see the file extension change to PSD (or TIF for that matter) until you go to File > Save in Photoshop.

Thanks for your reply.

I tried change both, psd and tiff into external editor settings

Dont matter the 3 choices (edit copy, edit with lr changes or original) the file opened in photoshop has always the .jpg extension.

I have used before and the file opened had always the extension selected in the external editor settings.

I can´t figure out....

What does the file as once you have finished in PS ? My files show up as DNG's in photoshop until I actually save them. As Rob suggested above, this is the case with other files too.

When I select edit a copy, LR create a .jpg copy and open photoshop with this file, after processing If I save as .psd LR doesn not include the file in the catalog and I need to do it manually and having at the end 3 files, original, copy and processed one.... Could not solve so far....

I will try reinstall photoshop and lightroom

The file will always open with the same file extension as the source file selected in Lightroom. It only changes after you save it in Photoshop. This is normal behavior.

In Photoshop, just go to File > Save. Don't use Save As.

The original file I am using is a .jpg

Follow the steps I am doing

1 - click on the original file (.jpg) extension, right button -> edit in photoshop.
2 - select -> edit a copy
3 - photoshop opens with the following name <filename-edit>.jpg
4 - select auto-tone adjustments and click and save (ctrl+w)
5 - photoshop asks for jpeg save settings
6 - close photoshop and get back to lightroom, I still have a .jpeg file instead a .psd I have configured into external editor settings...

If you guys saying to me that it is normal, I can not understand the external editor settings usage.

I am tottaly confused now... Why adobe added it ?

OK, now I know what is happening.....
LR only convert to .tif or .psd if I choose Edit in Photoshop With Lightroom Changes.

You are opening a jpeg so it will stay a jpeg. The external editor settings are for RAW/DNG only because many external applications can't handle RAW/DNG so we have to convert to something else.

Yes it will stay a jpeg, a copy is made so the original is unchanged. This method is the way that LR can keep track of the files, the same happens for TIFFs and PSD's if you select "Edit a copy with LR Adjustments" - a copy is made of the file type.

Bingo!

I have the same problem, i believe that this is some thing wrong, because it doesnt happen before

The problem is after we Save it to psd/tiff, it will not include that file into the LR's catalog.

In the past i dont experience this. It is a JPG but it automatically convert to TIFF/PSD (depend on what i choose in preferences)

I would like to report my problem detaily, hope someone can help me out of it
I use LR 3.3 64 bit with PS CS5 64 bit on Windows7 64bit with CR6.3.
In the past, it happens like this:
- I select External edit preference to TIFF file.
- If i select the file "abc.jpg" and select "Edit a copy" (with or without LR changes), a file name "abc-edit.tif" will be created and opened by PS, after i finish editing, i click "Save" and the "abc-edit.tif" will appear as-is in the LR's catalog.

Now, it happens like this:
- If i select the file "abc.jpg" and select "Edit a copy with LR changes", it will open the original file "abc.jpg" in PS (with the LR changes) (!).
- If i select the file "abc.jpg" and select "Edit a copy without LR changes", it will create a "abc-edit.jpg" and open in PS. After i finished editing, if i save it as a tif/psd file, that file will not appear in LR catalog (but the "abc-edit.jpg" file)

I dont think this is normal and the effort i have tried are:
- Update camera raw to 6.3
- Delete all PS preferences by delete all .psp file and Hold Ctrl-Alt-Shift when opening PS
- Uninstall and reinstall PS CS5 and LR
- Uninstall PS CS5 and install PS CS4

None of above way works for me and the problem still the same.
Anybody share the same problem w/ me and have any clue about this.
Thanks !

Hi, welcome to the forum.

What you describe is, I think, exactly how Lightroom/PSCS5 is supposed to work....

1. When you select 1234.jpg file and do "Edit In..." and choose 'Edit a copy with LR changes' then PSCS5 opens and the file name at the top of the picture window does indeed say '1234.jpg' (but the bit depth shows as 16bit). However, when you then click on Save, NOT 'Save As', the file is then saved as 1234-Edit.tif and appears back in Lightroom stacked with the original file. Have you actually selected 'Save' to see what happens?
2. If however, you simply select "Edit a Copy", then Lightroom immediately creates an 8bit copy of the file, called 1234-Edit.jpg, stacks it with the original jpg, and then opens PSCS5 with the filename 1234-Edit.jpg (8bit). So even if you do not subsequently do a Save in Photoshop the copy will still exist in Lightroom. Note that if you attempt to create a TIF/PSD file in Photoshop by doing 'Save As' this file, as you have discovered, will NOT appear back in Lightroom....by design.

So, as I said I think Lightroom is operating exactly as designed. I agree that the current process is a little different to when using CS3 (when you chose to 'Edit with LR adjustments' the Tif file was created immediately before being passed to Photoshop CS3) and so might initially be confusing...

Hope this helps.
