I recently had a situation where Lightroom crashed on me and then would not recognise the catelogue my photos were stored in.

After taking my Mac to a tech, he reinstalled the photos into a new catelogue but I have found that a number of worked up files are missing and on the DNG originals are there. Quite distressing really and what is more distressing is that my tech found the same situation on a forum like this that had occurred numerous times before.

Mark, welcome. Obviously you got the Australian LR version - it does what it likes!! :) Did you report you problem through a bug report?? Your tech guy might be a whizz but there certainly was and possibly still is the possibility of your work being recovered by an Adobe engineer. If you were automatically writing changes to file/xmp you should not have lost much or any work. While it doesn't help you there can be issues with any application but to be honest there have not been many reports of crashes that have caused big problems.If you have a copy of the crashed catalog it could be helpful to pass it on to Adobe to see if they can help others and you by isolating any issue. Providing details of what you were doing, etc helps as well.I too have been using LR for many years and have never had a crash that has caused any lost work. I may not be a very heavy shooter but have over 45k files in my catalog from this year and it performs as expected.

Don't write it off quite yet - your tech may be great, but they can't know every program out there. This isn't usually half as bad as it sounds.

All of the things you've changed in LR are stored in Lightroom's catalog. Lightroom's catalog is a database like any other, so there is always a risk of that catalog becoming corrupted, usually as a result of a hardware error. That's why by default it asks you to back up the catalog on a regular basis. That's what he will have found on the forums - and I'm guessing he probably didn't read too much further. These things are almost always retrievable.

So, the question is, did you allow Lightroom to run its catalog backups, and do you still have them? If you do, we should be able to retrieve most of your lost settings too.

I have to agree with Victoria here. LR has a few tricks up its sleeve if you allow it to make it's backups and do integrity checks.

Also... the survey you put up doesn't have a choice for those who haven't had LR crash on them.
