Recently, Lightroom has been behaving strangely. When I select an image or series of images in Library to do some keywording, the Keywording box shows "waiting..." and a spinning wheel appears at the top of the metadata panel. This goes on for up to five minutes before the keyword box clears, and the metadata appears.

Any suggestions on what might be causing this?

Thanks

ps: All my images and my Lightroom catalogue are stored on an external hard drive connected to the PC by USB3 cable.

When I try to quit Lightroom, it says it is still writing metadata changes into XMP.
Turn off that option in the Lightroom preferences and see if that helps speeding things up. Unless you need this for a very specific reason, it is useless anyway.
