I noticed around v 2.3, or 2.4, that when I import into LR and back up to an external hard drive, that instead of maintaining the original folder name, 2''9-11-'6 for example, that it will instead name the the folder "imported on 2''9-11-'6" on the external only. This means that pictures taken on multiple days but imported at the same time will be in the same folder on the external, and the date could be off.

Is there any way to change this to maintain my folder names and structure on the external?

No, sorry, the import backup is more of a 'temporary' backup while you get the photos into your usual backup system. Plus if you deleted photos from LR, they wouldn't be deleted from that import backup either. You're better off using a proper backup system - I'm quite partial to using File Sync software to keep a mirrored copy of my usual setup, which would be very easy to restore in the event of a disaster. Vice Versa on Windows or Chronosync on Mac usually get my vote.
