Lightroom auto download issues

One of the features of Lightroom that I really liked is that when I inserted a CF card, Lightroom would automatically launch, and a screen would come up asking me what I wanted to do with the files on importing. This was so much better than auto play and bridge that I went and disabled auto play on the download for pictures and had it do nothing. Then I went back to download a card and Lightroom would not give me the same screen. I got it back to the point that Lightroom launches when I insert a card, but the importer screen [for lack of a better description] does not appear. I can go to Library and import and manually launch the import, but I did like the prior auto feature.

What did I do wrong, and more importantly, how do I go about fixing it? I am dangerous around computers and software.

Under Edit > Preferences, on the Import tab is an item "Show import dialog when a memory card is detected". Is it checked?

Bill and earlyman, can you please fill out your signatures (in the UserCP top left of the page) so we can see what sort of systems you are using. This will facilitate accurate replies rather than guesses.

Geoff, I'm having the same problem. LR opens when I plug in the card but no Import dialog shows up. If I wait long enough(at least a couple of minutes) a dialog box pops up with the message "Choose a source from which to import photos" and two buttons: "J:\(Nikon D3'')" and "Choose Files..."

Also, since I started using my iPod to back up my photos, LR opens every time I plug it in. No import dialog and I've set Autoplay in Windoze to "Take No Action" for every item in the Autoplay menu but it still opens LR when connected.

Let me know if you need any more info. This is definitely not the way LR behaved before the 1.3 update and it's fairly annoying. Not something I can't live with but who needs an extra source of aggravation these days? I'm certainly up to my quota without getting it from my computer.....

The box is checked for auto import dialog when the memory card is detected. I will try to post a signature, but it is with a CF card from either a D2'' or a D2x, and the HP Media Center 775'n computer set up is Windows Vista Home Premium, an AMD 64 dual core, with 4 gb ram, and two internal hard drives and one 75' external firewire hd. I am using CA Internet Security Suite 2''7.

My guess is that it looks like a problem with either Windows or LR/Windows, everything works ok on Mac in this respect, I will defer to a PC person.

You have to make sure that the Adobe Photo Download manager is running. When installing both Lightroom and CS3 it is possible that the CS3 downloader is installed instead of the Lightroom one.

I'm not behind my laptop right now but I think the application is named apdproxy.exe and should be visible in the taskbar.

Just an update....

Today being Sunday and my usual day for computer maintenance, after the routine stuff I uninstalled LR, cleaned the registry, temp files, etc., defragged, and installed 1.3 clean instead of the previous update over 1.2.

No joy. The only difference is that now, with the clean install, the "Choose a source...." dialog never comes up until I hit the import button. LR opens when I plug in the card but it just sits there and does nothing until I hit the Import button.

If anyone has a back channel to the LR staff I can email you a complete system info file if it would be of help. My computer is clean and well-maintained so I don't think there are any issues with spyware, etc.. This is starting to look like a bug to me.

Bill, you really ought to buy a Mac. 14 years on Macs, what's maintenance??

For some reason, Lightroom on Windows has to be running before you plug in/switch on the camera. Only then can I get the import dialog to pop up automatically. This doesn't make sense as the Adobe Photo Downloader launches Lightroom if it isn't running. I'll log this as a bug.

If I take your advice (originally to Bill), and purchase a Mac, will my $2''' worth of PC software work on it??? :cheesy:

Yes with, with Boot Camp or Parallels. Can't do the reverse going to a PC.

Mick, you're a genius! Thanks so much, I just tried it and the Import dialog popped up immediately, just like it used to. Card ejected when import finished, all's right with the world! Thanx gaain!

Just to add my name to the list getting this problem (on Vista Home Premium). It all worked OK until I installed PS Elements 6.', but that might be coincidence. I then got a dialog asking which program I wanted to open (LR or PSE) and I chose LR. LR does indeed get started , but the Import dialog does not pop-up automatically.
