Lightroom 5 transfer from old iMac to new iMac M4

I am a long term user of Lightroom 5 on an old iMac (High Sierra OS) and have just purchased a new iMac M4. Transferring Lightroom across seemed to work ok but whenever I open Lightroom on the new iMac I get "flashing" side menus for a few minutes before it settles down. If I then try to access photos or collections or to edit photos, Lightroom crashes - with several pages of Apple crash data. I have tried deleting and reinstalling but same problem.
Any ideas?

PS This may not be fatal as part of my reason for purchasing the new iMac is I am considering subscribing to the current Photoshop/Lightroom package - but I would like to get the original system working first.

Thanks in advance

Unless you are prepared to downgrade the version of MacOS on your new iMac M4, I seriously doubt that you will ever get LR5 to work to your satisfaction. I used to keep older versions like LR4 and LR5 installed on my systems (basically for testing purposes when trying to help users still using those older versions), but I eventually gave up as more and more things stopped working as my operating system was upgraded. So I personally think it's a lost cause, and I certainly wouldn't advocate downgrading the OS.

If you are considering a subscription, I can't see any value in trying to get LR5 working.....the subscription version of LR5 (called Lightroom Classic which is now at version 14) will upgrade your current LR5 catalog, so you should not lose any data, and you will of course then have access to all the great enhancements that have been made in the last 10 years since LR5 became obsolete.

LR5 uses a 16bit installer. This is not compatible with current versions of MacOS. You are not likely going to be able to transfer the 32bit LR5 app and get it registered with Adobe as Adobe has discontinued the registration servers for obsolete apps that are no. Longer supported.

If your intention is to subscribe to the current version of Lightroom Classic then all you need is your master LR5 Catalog, image files and settings. You can use these instructions to properly transfer from your old computer to the new one: https://www.lightroomqueen.com/how-move-lightroom-to-new-computer/

Once you have the LR5 five catalog and the LrC app,you can open the LR5 catalog file with the LrC app. It will read the old catalog and write out a new catalog file in the current database structure.

You're confusing LR5 with LR6.....it was LR6 that had the 32bit activation process which prevents it being installed on 64bit MacOS. LR5 had no such constraints, and can be installed on the latest MacOS (as the OP has already done). The problem with LR5 is that the actual functionality of the app has started to malfunction and has been progressively getting worse.
