Hi, now I realise I need to bite the bullet and ditch my 5.7 perpetual version to a subscription service but before I do, can anyone please help me to understand why, when trying to import photos on my iMac (OS Big Sur 11.2.1), the import bar just sits there (at about 1% or so I estimate) and nothing happens?

Kind regards,

Big Sur is light years beyond the technology that was common when LR5.7 was developed. LR5.7 support ended years before Big Sur was even in development. Your expectations that you can run obsolete software are unrealistic. LR 5.7 has not been tested on Big Sur and won’t be. The 32 bit installer won’t install the app on Big Sur. There might even be 32 bit parts of the Install module that won’t run in BigSur.

You could try System Preferences > Privacy > Files & Folders and make sure Lightroom has access to everything it needs. It's a long shot, but LR5 may not know to ask for those permissions.
