Lightroom 2 not rendering 1:1 previews...why?

Hey Lightroom community,

I have completed my massive move from iPhoto to Lightroom and though it was a massive project it is mostly done and beautiful. After learning a little bit more about lightroom, I have learned that 1:1 previews, though larger and slower, are simply delicious to work with once they are there. So, though I have imported 7'''+ photos from iPhoto, when I did, I hadn't yet learned about the differences between preview sizes.

Now that I have decided to go with the 1:1, I found that handy feature under the Library tab "Render 1:1" photos. So I selected all hit render and left for the day.

Upon returning, I was pleased that most of my photos had been rendered well. However there were about 5% of my pictures that it didn't render.

No problem, just do it again.

This time it said I have roughly 4'' photos that still need 1:1 rendering.

THE PROBLEM: It won't render them anymore. It says "Rendering 1 of 412" and sits on one for hours. Why?

I tried lessening the count to a couple specific folders that I knew where part of the 412 count, and it worked.

Also, I accidentally deleted a whole folder's worth of photos, and when I reimported them, I chose 1:1 and it worked fine.


2 Questions: Since the mass-rendering approach of rendering all the photos left to render 1:1 doesn't seem to work, is there a way I have have Lightroom tell me which photos DON'T have the 1:1?

Second question...why won't it render them anymore? What is going on? These look to be mostly DNG files that it gets stuck on.

Welcome to the forum. Start by filling your signature out PC/mac, canon/nikon, RAW, DNG etc etc.

Questions
1. Are all the images in your catalogue DNG or do you have a mixture or RAW and DNG?

2. If you render the images individually in the library by zooming in at 1:1, does that take the total count not rendered, down in number?

3. Upon import what was you rendering preference?


A few points.
1. When you import, select 'render standard size previews' only. Rendering 1:1 with import just takes too long.

2. Having all your files at 1:1 is known to slow the program down. You only need 1:1 when you want to zoom in for sharpening/noise reduction or general pixel peeping. When you want to do this, LR will create the 1;1 preview on the fly, thus only the images you needed to have at 1:1 for that session are rendered that way.

3. Once you have done your developing work, and have no need to zoom in, you can discard the 1:1 previews. Go to preferences and choose when you want LR to discard them.

Failure to render all the selected images at 1:1 has been reported as a bug.

I'm not aware of a way to identify those which are 'unrendered'.

As Braders points out, 1:1's have limited value, principally if you're going to be doing a lot of navigating at high zooms in modules other than Develop.
