Lightroom 2.6 and Win7 rename problem

Lightroom will import, rename and convert to dng my photos from my Flash card. I can Develop them and the changes are saved (I'm not writing to xmp files), but it won't let me rename a file.

I have full permissions to the directory, in fact, I have to go out into Windows Explorer and change the name then get Lightroom to find it again.

I have tried running Lightroom as administrator but no change.

The error message I get is that the file is ".....missing or not writable".
Is there a file name length maximum in Lightroom? The file is 8 directories deep, which is 83 characters with a total of 1'9 with the file name.

Can you give an example of the filename you are trying to convert? From what to what?

Thanks for replying. The full path is:
G:/Old-D-Drive/Media/My Pictures/My Photos/2'1'/Projects/Tamron-focus-test/2'1'-'4-17/
The filename was to change from Squirrel-1913.dng to Variable-aperture-1913.dng

The long path is caused by having to get at my files in Lightroom from a dual boot system of XP and Vista. They have now both gone and I just have Windows 7 but the photos are still on an old drive till I get a new one going.

[/quote]I think what is happening is that "G:\Old-D-Drive\..." Is still owned by one of the old systems. In Windows Explorer open Computer and right click on Drive G:\. In the Properties Dialog, Select {Security}{Advanced}{Owner} If the current owner is not you , but some long GUID name, click {Edit} and change the owner to your login with administrative privledges. Check the checkbox "Replace owner on suncontainers and objects" and click {OK}

Just tried that, and it was a long GUID, but it's made no difference. Why would this difference in ownership stop me changing the name from within Lightroom but let me do it in Explorer?

Explorer probably uses the SYSTEM user. Im not sure What user LR uses.

I am surprised that taking ownership did not fix this. The "file is not writable" tells me that the problem is permissions.

Go back to the Properties dialog for the drive and set permissions for all the folders in the drive for the Users Group to Full Control. Let me know if you get any "Access denied" messages and on which folders this message occurs. Check these folders to see if they or sub folders have the Read only flag set.

Hi - I am having the same problems with lightroom as discussed above. I tried changing the permission on the drive, but it didn't help. I am at a loss...

Hi georgettea, welcome to the forum!

Your profile says you're on 10.6, so there may be some other issues involved. Can you tell us a bit more about the problem you're seeing?
