I recently upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit and installed Lightroom 2.6 64-bit. I'm having problems with some of my images.

For some images, when I zoom in on the image I get a message saying "Rendering: Larger Preview..." and then the image gets heavily pixelated and never comes good. I have tried deleting the 1:1 previews for the images and rendering them again but the job never completes.

I have checked the original files (.NEF from a Nikon D3'') and they open fine in Nikon ViewNX.

I should add that the problem happens in Library. If I switch to Develop, the previews get rendered. Switching back to Library they stay.

What happens if you pre-render the image, using Library > Library > Previews > Render 1:1 ?

If you use more than one catalog, does this happen in all of them?
You say 'some images'. Any common characteristics between the problem images?

The progress indicator sits there and does nothing.

I only have one catalog.

None at all. As I work through a set of images, 1' might be fine, the next 3 are a problem, then 5 are fine, 2 are a problem, etc.

Well, I'm out of simple ideas.

You might try selecting a small representative sample of your images, and Export the As Catalog. Open the new catalog and see if you experience the same problem. If you'd rather not play around with your real images, another similar approach is to just shoot some junk shots, and import them to a new catalog for experimenting. The point being is we're trying to identify potential specific catalog related problems, which might indicate corruption, and which may possibly be cured by Exporting to a new catalog.

Anybody have any other ideas for Andrew?

I would try this...

shutdown LR and rename / move the previews.lrdata file. Then start LR and see if it renders new previews ok.

Here's what I did...

I had some images I hadn't yet imported them. I imported them with "Initial Previews" set to "1:1". Lightroom imported the images fine and also created all the 1:1 previews. I was able to page through all 5' images at 1''% and all the previews were fine. I even quit from Lightroom and restarted it and did the same thing. All images were fine.

It appears the problem is only with previous images. The ones I last had problem with were imported on 28 February. I always import with "Initial Previews" set to "1:1" and I have "Automatically Discard 1:1 Previews" set to "After 3' days" so these were well before the time they should have been discarded.

I had the same problem with a previous batch where some images couldn't be viewed at 1:1 and again it was less than 3' days from when the files were imported.

As I mentioned before, Develop has no problem creating the 1:1 previews and once I create them by viewing 1''% in Develop, they load fine in Library.

Of these latest imported images, I selected all 5' images and discarded the 1:1 previews. I then requested they be rendered again and they rendered fine.

Have you tried my suggestion ?

Well, No. Not yet. I figured importing 5' new images and having them rendered shows that it can render new images OK. Also discarding the previews on those images and rendering them again also works.

So you no longer have any issues ?

Develop previews (Camera Raw) are not the same as the Library previews. If the preview folder/package gets corrupted you can get these types of issues. I found that removing the preview package and re-generating has fixed stuff like this in the past.

Regenerating them manually may have also sorted it out by the looks of it.

None, for the image that had issues so far. I don't know if I'm going to run into the same issues again. I suspect I may.

I don't know if I was generating what you are calling Develop previews or not. What I was saying was (for the images that had issues), zooming to 1''% in the Library module resulted in massive pixelation and the 1:1 preview never being built. If I did the same thing in the Develop module, the 1:1 was rendered fine and the 1:1 was still there and fine when I went back to the Library module.

I am loathe to throw away all my previews in case it wasn't the cause of the issues and it is a waste.

I've done that now and it appears to render the new previews OK. But now I have to rebuild all my previews.

Yes it is a pain, I left mine running overnight and was fine though. It hasn't happened again since so I think it's fairly rare.

I'm having exactly the same problem.

I have discovered that changing a develop setting allows the preview render to complete.

I haven't gone the delete-previews route yet but I think it's in my near future.

Deleting previews seems to have solved the problem. Rebuilding was a nightmare on my seven-year-old XP system. It's a non issue with the new machine...it builds them faster than I can look at them.

So far so good with me after deleting the previews. This suggests a bug in the 64-bit code to me. This is the first time since starting to use Lightroom 1.2 that I've had to delete the preview data after going through multiple upgrades. Granted going from 1.x to 2.' rebuilt the previews, but all the upgrades from 2.' to 2.6 I never had a problem. Less than one week into using the 64-bit code and there's a problem.

I had the problem immediately...quite a shock.
