Lightroom 2.3 crashes when trying to import

I'm using a Dell Laptop w/XP professional 7 have Lightroom 2.3 installed. It used to work just fine. I haven't used it to import since probably November ''8. I just noticed tonight that every time I hit the import button, it stalls then locks up. I have to force it to quit & then it does the same thing next time I start Lightroom.

I've read online and the only reference I could find to this problem was possibly a security update on 2/25 from Microsoft that could have caused some problems with the installation. I followed the instructions & uninstalled the update, uninstalled Lightroom & reinstalled it. Nothing different happened. Strange thing, though, when I reinstalled Lightroom it didn't ask me for my key code. I upgraded from 2.2.

Please help as I need to import from my laptop.

This part is normal. The standard uninstall leaves all your configuration data intact. So you also shouldn't lose preferences, presets, templates, and similar stuff.
