Lightroom Version
I've just noticed the a release candidate of Lightroom 2.1 is available for download from Adobe Labs http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Lightroom_2.1 There appears to be a long list of fixes in this version. Has anyone downloaded and installed it yet? I'm sligthy afraid to be the first kid on the block to try something that still is notin formal release.

Yes, I have installed it. So far it seems to run well, although I am just getting started with it. If I come across any bugs, I promise to post the drama!
I backed up my catalog prior to upgrade just in case. ;)

Hutch, Welcome to LR Forums. Well, so far it's definitely no worse than 2.' . Since the catalog structure is identical, I don't think there's much 'early adopter' risk. It'll be easy enough to reinstall 2.', if you're not happy. I think you will be.

As Darlene says, 'use a net', practice safe backup hygiene.

I've installed it and all works OK. I have tested the Mac 64-bit preview generation and it appeared to work initially, generating previews of my 6,''' image catalog extremely fast. However, at about 4'' previews, everything came to a complete slow down and it started to use up almost all of my 16 GB of RAM. I closed Lightroom and it did not free up the majority of the RAM it allocated.
I have submitted a bug report to Adobe. Other than the annoying memory leak, everything else seemed to be OK.

One thing it certainly has done is solve the writing to .xmp and creating virtual copy problems that users with Athlon XP machines were experiencing.

Big thanks to Adobe for that!:cheesy:

So far so good.....

The new adjustment tools are more responsive, which is really pleasing. :)

However the major issue - no interoperability with PS - remains unsolved. I remain stuck with the PS .exe workaround. :|

My version of PS is fully updated.

Which version of PS are you using?

Balliolman, just try the steps in this Technote again now you're on 2.1, and if it still isn't working, report it, as most of those CS3 bugs have been fixed as far as is known.

Hi,

I have two immediate comments about this RC version:

1. The "dead key" keyboard bug (which has been reported so many times since version 1.x) is still not fixed. Any accented or special characters that need a dead key to be generated are not produced correctly. For example "ê" generates the following sequence: "^^e".

I don't know why Adobe never commented about this bug but a lot of european LR users have this problem since the beginning and now, it's becoming very irritating. Adobe cannot be unaware of this bug since it has been reported so many times including via bug reports sent to the support.

2. The custom camera profiles which were generated with DNG Profile Editor and worked fine in version 2.' are not compatible with this version. Using such a profile generates *huge* color shifts (green with my own profiles).

Can you show us examples of the DNG shifts Patrick?

Yes, indeed, it is astonishing and actually totally unacceptable that an international company like Adobe cannot produce software that can accomodate accentuated characters, which many European languages have. However, Lightroom is not the only one, there are still (too) many products out there. (I think it is still not possible to write a Turkish name correctly in a German edition of Outlook, this kind of flaw isn't solved since Outlook was first released!). It shows the still US-centric thinking of the software industry, which is bad as the personal computer is already in its third decade.

I tried to keyword the images from my last trip to Turkey and had the same issue.

Kind regards

Thomas

Hello Victoria,

You won't believe me: the problem is gone after rebooting the system. Installing LR2.1 doesn't require rebooting, so I didn't. After restarting the system this morning, no more color shifts.

I'm puzzled. ACR camera profiles do not depend from LR itself and LR 2.1 doesn't comewith a new version of Camera Raw.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember reading that LR2.1 added some new camera models as well as all the bug fixes. This would suggest that this release lines LR2.1RC up with ACR 4.6RC...?

Edit: Yes, I read it here http://blogs.adobe.com/jnack/ dated 19.'9.'8

Anthony.

LR camera profiles as shown in the calibration panel are dependent on the version of camera raw used to create them and a lot were updated recently.
LR's processing version of ACR that is embedded for processing raw files is generally the current version and is 4.6 with LR2.1 as attached screen shot shows.

Rebooting fixes a multitude of computer problems Patrick! Good to hear it's working anyway.
