Lightroom 2.1 freeze during import

Hi all,As you can see I'm new to forums.I have been searching forums and web for an answer to my problem but can't seem to find the exact some problems anywhere.I use lightroom as a database for our newspaper pictures that I take. Steps are as follows.
1- Download photo's from card using iPhoto. Pictures are with Nikon D3''
2- Drag the photo's the folder I want them.
3- Rename them.
4- I import the photos at their current location.
5- Lightroom preview menu comes up.
6- Click import.So far so good.My problem is that at least 3 times a day I get to this point and lightroom will import one photo and then I get the Mac spinning ball (Have left the computer sit for 1' min but still the same). I have to "force Quit" and restart lightroom.I have tried to import with different previews but nothing seems to work.Catalog has about 35,''' pictures.
I have tried deleting lightroom preferences. Relaunched and Optimized but no joy.

Lightroom is now at v 2.4 and you should update to that version (it a free update). There have been many bug fixes since 2.1.

Post again to say if the problem is still there after the update.
Just a thought, how much free space do you have left on your HDD. You have a pretty sizable catalog.

I have updated to Lightroom to 2.4.
HDD says Capacity 232.57
Available 132.43
The photo's are stored on a external 1TB drive.
I'll let you know how I go.

Just a quick update. As mentioned above updated to lightroom 2.4 but have found I still have the same problem. Just happened again. Today I have imported twice into Lightroom with no problems. Third time no go.
Works okay to import pictures for a couple of times during the day but then for no reason (that I can see) Lightroom freezes (spinning ball) and have to force quit. I work in a newsroom and leave Lightroom open while I go out on jobs. Could this be the problem? I may have to take more notice of how often it happens.

Hi Denis, I'm not importing great amount or large files. Average is 1'-2' jpg photo's. I'm keeping a log of when and how often it happens. Also what other programs are running.

Hi wonkydogman, welcome to the forum!

I'd also keep an eye on what's going on in Activity Monitor when it happens.

I don't suppose it's always falling over the same file, is it? I'm just wondering if there's a corrupted file amongst them.

If it was stopping or having trouble with the same file why would it work some times and not others. I only have the one catalog with 35,''' pictures. I have attached a couple of screen captures below to see if there is any information that may help. I work for a weekly newspaper and add photos using edition numbers. I search for photo's of people that I have photographed every week, so I would prefer to keep just the one catalog. But have thought about starting another.I did notice that my Lightroom Catalog-2 Previews.lrdata in picture is 14.29 GB. Does that look right?

Picture 1 I think is the backup catalog Previews.lrdata but it's size is only 56 Mb.

I think I understand the size difference because when I open up this catalog (smaller one) Lightroom has grey'd out thumbnails but then they begin to show when you scroll down.

That difference is fine - the *.lrdata file is the jpeg previews, which can be rebuilt on demand so aren't included in the catalog backup.

I'd probably try starting a fresh catalog just as a test, to see whether that imports nicely. Leave your existing catalog where it is, and if that solves it, we can always look at moving existing data over.

Ok, great, and if it continues working, I'd suggest using Import from Catalog to pull the data over from the other catalog, hopefully losing any glitches along the way.

If you want to, you can. Just gets a little more complicated working on which you stored a photo in, and making sure they're not in both catalogs at the same time.

Use the "Import from Catalog" function and import form one to the other. I'm sure you can fgure out which to import to and from!! ;)

Quick update. I got sick and tired of using two catalogs. So I created a new catalog and imported both my catalogs into one. The problem above has started again. Would like to know my next step. Is 35,''' pictures "to much" for lightroom2. Or is it a problem with some of the pictures I try to import (taken with all types of camera's). I'm getting very unhappy with Lightroom2

Sorry to hear that - you must be so frustrated!

So the problem was confined to one catalog? And has now come back since that catalog's been merged in? Sounds like there may be something adrift in that catalog.

35,''' is not too much for LR. My biggest is now at 3''k+. You may have some level of catalog corruption there though.

Personally my next step would be to take that catalog, use Export as Catalog to divide it up into chunks, try importing into each of those chunks to determine which chunk has the problem, merge the ok chunks back in together, and then narrow down the problem chunk to figure out exactly where the problem is. I'd bet it's confined to an odd folder somewhere. And typing all that probably takes almost as long as actually doing it, so it's not as big a job as it sounds.

Dog, I second VB's advice. I've a catalog with around 4'k images in it. I recently upgraded my PC, did a bunch of moving stuff around, plus this time of the year is busy for me photo wise.

Somewhere in the first week of July 2''9 photos, (around 5'' images or so) there's a glitch somewhere. I've exported and reimported catalogs, by groups of years, and single years, and so on, and no matter what, once I import that week from an existing catalog, the target catalog just grinds to a halt.

I haven't gotten any further than that, there's nothing currently vital in that particular week, and I'm quite tied up at present. If I figure out exactly what's going on in there, I'll be posting back.

VB's right, divide and conquer.


As a side note, while I generally subscribe intellectually to the 'import wherever, let LR manage' philosophy vociferously espoused by some of our members, I'm not sure how I would have narrowed in on this issue, without a date-based folder system.

Hi all. Thanks for your advice.
After some digging around in my system I came across a Lightroom file (not Lightroom 2). After moving it to desktop I started lightroom 2 again. Program opened fine so I deleted it by moving to trash. Fingers crossed I have NOT had the same problem importing photo's after 2 days. Lightroom2 did auto-close today thou during creating previews (once photo's had been imported). Not sure if it's related.

What extension does the file (now in the trash) have??

Thanks for that, it was most likely an old preferences list from an earlier version.
