Hello,
I really have a bad problem with Lightroom on my new computer:
It crashes every time and immediately when I try to enter
the develop module.

I'm really despaired.
I tried everything I could find in the forums:
  • Restarted with new preferences and new catalog
  • Reinstalled Lightroom: 1.' works - 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3.1 show the same behaviour
  • Checked nvidia Desktop Manager - it's turned off
  • Completely uninstalled nvidia Software - still crashing
  • Tried various older nvidia driver - crashing
  • Disabled all running services except the Microsoft ones - crashing
  • Installed the newest mainboard and VIA driver
What else should I do? BTW: The behaviour is the same as in this thread except that I'm running XP:
http://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/showthread.php?t=298

My system:
Windows XP Professional SP2
MSI K8T Neo Board
Athlon 3'''+
1 GB RAM
Geforce 76''GT

I would really appreciate your help!
Best regards,
Jens.

Hint: The Lightroom Develop Module crashes only when I enter it with a photo selected (regardless wether it is JPG or RAW). When I select a photo in the empty develop module it crashes immediately, too.

I forgot to say that I already tested my memory with memtest86+:
The memory is ok -> Lightroom is still crashing

Have you tried removing all Develop presets too? A corrupted preset can cause these kinds of issues.

Hi Victoria,
I assume that the develop presets are also in the $User\Applications\Adobe\Lightroom
folder? Then yes, I moved it away completely.
Best regards, Jens.

Ok, let's think this through then....

You've got a new catalog
You've got new preferences
You've removed all presets

Does it come up with an error message before it crashes?
Are there any crash logs that might explain what's happening?

What happens if......

1. ...you skip Develop mode and try one of the other modes (Slideshow, Print, Web)?

2. ...you only import a couple of pictures, so we can be sure it's not a corrupted file - possible files downloaded from the web, to discount an incompatibility with your camera for the minute

3. ...you try to export these files, to in theory check that the files are not the problem.

4. ...you uninstall, remove every trace of Lightroom, redownload 1.3.1 (in case the download was corrupted), and install straight to 1.3.1 (no need to install 1.' first)

We're determined to get to the bottom of this!!!!

3x yes

No, no Lightroom error message, only the Windows XP "we encountered
a problem, do you want to sent an error report" message.

Yes, I have the Windows Crash Information, but I don't want to post it here because I do not know what information is hiding in there. I'm a system developer. Do you want me to look for something specific?

All other modules are working, no problem.

2. ...you only import a couple of pictures, so we can be sure it's not a corrupted file - possible files downloaded from the web, to discount an incompatibility with your camera for the minute

I tried RAW-Files from two different cameras and I even tried an example JPG that came with Photoshop Elements 4. It's crashing every time.

3. ...you try to export these files, to in theory check that the files are not the problem.

I cannot make this right now, because I'm not at home right now. But I don't think this will help, because I already tried so many images with different origin.

4. ...you uninstall, remove every trace of Lightroom, redownload 1.3.1 (in case the download was corrupted), and install straight to 1.3.1 (no need to install 1.' first)

Been there, done that. But I have not removed anything from the registry so that I didn't need to re-enter my serial number.

We're determined to get to the bottom of this!!!!

I really appreciate your help, thank you!

What I'm planning to do this evening (CEST) is to
- install an other graphics card
- look for corrupted DLLs Do you know what DLLs are used by Lightroom,
especially by the Develop Module?

On my computer there is also Photoshop Elements 4 installed. Do you think the problem with the Develop Module can be produced by this? (because Photoshop Elements 4 is not compatible with the newest Camera RAW?)

Best regards, Jens.

System logs - no idea, I'm just wondering if it'd be possible to spot any clues - but you're probably better at that than I am!!! ;)

Another graphics card is a good plan.

I'd also try removing any monitor profiles as LR uses them slightly differently to other programs. I've seen crashes in the past simply from a corrupt monitor profile, on both Mac and PC.

PSE4 - no, I wouldn't expect that to be the problem.

DLL's - no idea I'm afraid. I'm running the Mac version so I'm not much help on that one!!

When you first tried a new catalog, did you jump over to Develop before you had any photos imported? Just wondering if maybe the Navigator preview is related to the crash?

If you can open Develop with an empty catalog, then perhaps collapsing the Navigator panel, then importing and switching back to Develop would work?

Perhaps you've tried that, but thought it was worth mentioning.

I have not tried collapsing the navigator panel right now. I will do so in the evening and then tell you the result.
Thank you for the tip!

Hi Jens,

Sorry to hear that you have the same problem that I was experiencing (although on Vista).

I had to resort to a complete reinstall after trying everything I could to resolve the problem. The good news is that everything is now as it should be - including no corrupt photographs. Whilst I was investigating the problem I was able to retrieve the catalog onto an XP Pro machine (I have my catalog on a NAS device) which proved to me that I was faced with a localised corruption somewhere.

The only help I can offer is this link (as you haven't tried altering your Registry settings yet) - http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb4'1119&sliceId=1 - it seems to contain a complete list of Registry settings. As you may have guessed it didn't work for me - but I'm on Vista so it may work for you.

Good Luck

 Complete reinstall!
As you can imagine I would like to avoid that. I now have downloaded a program that lists all DLL dependencies for a certain program. Maybe I get a hint when I compare the versions of the DLLs on my new computer to the DLL versions used on my notebook (where Lightroom is still running, thank god).

Best regards, Jens.

BINGO!! And the problem was... the monitor driver!
Thank you all for your help, you guys are great! :D

Best regards, Jens.

Yippee! Thanks for posting back Jens, I'm so pleased you've got it sorted!

I too am having this problem. I am using an HP 5''' laptop, 4 gig of ram, and my catalogue on a WD My Passport (studio) drive operating through a USB and through Macdrives so as the PC will read my Mac formatted external drive. So I was sort of expecting some sort of glitch. Like the original poster I just ensure that no image is selected when I go to develop. Only use for a few hours once a week (still at the horse races) so it is no big deal for the convenience of having all my editing done and exported for the web before I go home.
