Lightoom put a white sqaure in

Hi,
Couple of issues that might be related.
Lightroom appears to be performing it's own adjustment after import.
You click on an image that looks good and as it renders the image it appears to apply an adjustment that make it look "bad"

Sometime it gets things wrong and a white square appears. Hopefully the attached file shows this.

Any ideas?

The white square, I'm not so sure about. We've seen similar problems with corrupt files from cards and readers. As well, there was a problem several versions ago with certain Olympus camera models, which have long since been fixed.

Have you been using Lr long? If not, try this one. Lr is ruining my pictures!

If you're up on that, tell us more about your workflow, importing and so on. Could be an unwanted preset/profile has snuck into your workflow.

Thanks for the replies, it could well be the Lr is ruining my pictures issue.
I've looked in all the places I could find for importing pictures and I've not found an unwanted preset, but it could be that. I've only been using LR for about 6 months and found it to be a great product except for this issue.

Basically I'm importing using LR and then LR seems to go through the entire new import and adjusts every image, takes about 3-4 second on each image and it changes them subtly. So hence could well be the problem identified. Where do I need to look for unwated preset
LR then proceeds to corrupt one file in 1''' or so. So not a huge issue except when it writes over the "one".

I've also seen it do the same thing when applying the same developing settings on an entire folder.

But the question is still, are you importing from the camera or a card reader. that can make a difference, too? Which is it? Since it is one, then try the other, Do you still have this issue?

I'm importing from a card reader. Why would this make a difference?

Perhaps I should add I've copied the files from the card to my hard drive and then importing without moving.
So card reader and camera are now where near the import process.

Ok, so in LR the image displayed is corrupt.
What about the actual image?

If you are on a mac, right click a thumbnail and select "show in finder" (Windows "show in explorer").
Open the actual file, check if it is corrupt.

Ah, users have reported problems from some card readers, not others and some cameras, not card readers. Just trying to narrow the issues.

Since Lr never writes to the CR2 file (unless you have optionally permitted it to change the capture date) I find that hard to believe.

On the other hand, I will accept that your system corrupted the file while Lr was using it.

I have opened the CR2 file using ACR directly and it's got the white square in it.
Have not intentially changed capture data.

Normal for a change to happen at that time.

This is likely to be LR rendering the image.

Well I would guess that the corruption could have happened on the import.
Did you say 1 in a 1''' files do this?

I think that when this happens next time I would do the following:

note the image details, close LR.
Manually drag the file from the card to your desktop see if it is corrupt.
I would also try this with a different machine and card reader.

Is the image that you see as corrupt on the HDD still on a memory card?
If yes, see if you can read the card elsewhere, is the image corrupt on the card?

Will modify my import process so that orignials are kept.
I think I see your logic so will see what happens, i.e. could be the camera or me doing something silly.

Jorgie, not necessarily silly, but we've found that Lr is so intensive in its processing and use of PC systems and image data, that it greatly magnifies any little system-type errors.

Melissa Gaul, one of Lr's engineers, calls it the worlds best 'bad memory finder'.
