Light Room 2.6 import issues with Canon S90

I have LR 2.6 with Camera Raw 5.6 on Windows XP and a Canon S9'

If the memory card is taken out of the camera and put into a card reader and import device is used LR displays thumbnails of the pictures and they can be selected, processed and imported.

If however, I try to import directly from the S 9' there is no thumbnail just a grayed out image backgrounds instead of thumbnail pictures.

If I use the Canon software to import the images to my computer and then try to import them "From Disk" I get the same grayed out thumbnails.

I would really like it to work with the camera the same way it works when I take the memory card out and put it in a reader.Any advice as to what I am doing wrong.

This is a commonly reported problem when trying to import directly from the camera, the usual solution suggested is to use a card reader and the problem almost always goes away. I do not think I have ever seen a real reason for the problem being put forward other than in some cases the user has had the camera in the wrong connection mode; some have a mass storage mode (ie they behave like an external hard disc when connected to the computer) and a mode for tethered or wireless capture.

The fact it also happens when you use import from disc having used the Canon software to transfer the files (I assume you are shooting raw) would indicate the process involving direct transfer from the camera removes or disables imbedded .jpeg and for some reason prevents LR from generating its own preview.

TroutEm, welcome to the forums. As Trevor says, this is a common problem, which seems to often involve both camera and specific computer system, and as far as I know, there's no generic solution. You'll find other folks can import from the S9', with no identifiable differences between setups. It generally ends up as "Huh, that's weird". You can try updating various drivers, e.g. video card, and see if your camera has a connection mode setting as Trevor suggests, but it's possible you may just be stuck using the card reader.
