Lighroom in windows 7- ALL pictures in Lightroom look very RED

I am at a total loss on this one. I run Lightroom on two different pc's- my desktop as described in my user info and my laptop, running XP Home. Both versions of LR were working fine until the other day when, for some strange, unknown reason, there was this overstated red hue to all the pictures in the Lighroom catalog. On the laptop, the look fine. If I take pictures from the desktop LR to the laptop, they're fine. If I use the "edit in PS cs3" from LR (desktop), the red hue is there again. If I view exported JPG's in windows picture viewer, they look red too, even if I haven't opened LR!! In short, any picture that LR has touched has this cancerous red hue.
Here's where it gets really weird- if I open the same files in Bridge, they look fine. Once I double click on them, and they're open in RAW, the cancer's back!!!

I have tried to uninstall Lightroom. It looks as though it's gone, but when I reinstall, it pops up exactly the same- even with all the custom presets, Identity plate, plugins, everything as it was before the uninstall. It's as if Windows 7 won't let me uninstall the friggin' program completely! I've even run CCleaner to remove the registry, to no avail.

Welcome to Lightroom Forums.

I would suggest recalibrating your monitor. If that's not something that you're familiar with, I'll ask one of our Windows users to step in and help you debug this.

Hi davey, welcome to the forum!

Let me get this right: Files look ok in any program until you import them into LR. Anything exported from LR gets a red cast, as does any raw file opened in ACR whether it's been near LR or not. Is that right?

Initial thoughts - I'd check that all of the images are at default settings - you could be applying a preset in the import dialog, or you could have changed the defaults. Actually, if the raw files opened into ACR from Bridge look red too, I'd guess you've changed the defaults. Try going to Develop module > Develop menu > Set Default Settings and hit the Restore Adobe Default Settings and then press the Reset button on an image and see if that solves it.

I'll take a look at the settings, things could be weird that way.
As far as what the files have touched and what causes the red cast, I have to wait until I finish this shoot today. All my photos have been archived through Lightroom, so they're ALL affected. I can open the same photos on my laptop (this is now W7 vs XP) and they're fine. I don't yet know whether a file opened directly through ACR without going through LR will have the color cast.

Oh, one more thing that may shed some more light. I can export these files to my web gallery, and then when I view them, on my same monitor looking at the web gallery, they again look fine. It definitely has something to do with how Lightroom is displaying these pictures.

It is definitely your monitor profile. You need to scrap the new one, like the stock one that came with the monitor, noted for often being corrupt and either do a software calibration by eye or a hardware calibration.

To check that this is so, try switching the profile to sRGB and see how much better it is. sRGB is not a proper monitor profile, but will hold you 'til you recalibrate!

Yep, I'm with Don, it's the monitor profile in that case. It was just your mention of exported images in Windows Picture Viewer being red too, that made me think of settings being applied, but if the web gallery's ok, then it's not that.

Don, YOU'RE MY HERO!!!!
I was printing a canvas the other day, and had somehow gotten the icc profile for that into the monitor profile (dunno how...)
set it back to default and it looks normal again.

[/quote]Glad you got it sorted, but Printing Profiles shouldn't be in with Monitor profiles, anyhow!

Glad you didn't actually have to Calibrate, just to get things 'right'.

Well, I am having the same red color cast problem in Lightroom. And I thought that it was happening on import. I can see that the images do appear slightly red or magenta upon import into LR, this is before I do any white balance work. So I have been trying all sorts of things ... but I have to keep shooting so I have been trying to correct with the color sliders. And the images are suffering.

Could this also be due to a screwed up monitor calibration? It's in my prints done both at home and at the LAB.

I calibrate monthly with xRite, use a grey card and when I use the eye dropper in LR it does come in more red than I expected so I end up backing off the white balance manually a bit .

Dan, welcome to the forums. Have a look at the histogram (both Library and Develop) in Lr. It should be mostly neutral gray, with peaks and valleys of RGB and CMY. If the gray has a color cast, that's *always* a bad monitor profile/driver. Magenta-ish prints are generally a sign of double profiling in the output stream.

What calibration profile(s) are you using in Lr's Develop Module Calibration Panel, lower right?

If your histogram is OK, we'll have to think a little harder..... :)
