I'm using Lightroom 2.1 and even when it is in the background with no operations pending, it will use between 65 and 85 percent of my CPU capacity and some 336 mb of RAM. I can deal with the RAM usage but the CPU hogging slows my computer to a crawl.

I'm using a Dell Dimension 3.2 gh (single core processor) with 2 gb RAM.

Just wondering if there's anything I can do otehr then shut it down.

Depends.

Lightroom does house keeping stuff in the background.

First up, is Auto Write to XMP on in Preferences? If it is, Lightroom is writing out XMP in the background.
Next, are you in All Photographs? Lightroom could be Accumulating Metadata.

This happened to me with L/R 1.4 after weeks of trying this and that and a CPU still winding up to 79% I found the culprit the Graphics Card had the wrong driver.
Windows in there updates had changed my Nvidia driver for a windows one, Installed the correct driver and bingo all back to normal.

Thanks for reporting back Terry - I'm not sure any one us would have thought of that one, but we'll certainly remember it for the future!
