Which is it supposed to be.

I am working in a folder, and have a brain wave about another image, set of images, and wish change my work flow.

I then decide to filter out this imaginary set using the filter bar........do i have to open the left panel, open the folders, and then select the top root folder in order to filter these images from entire catalogue???

It seems that the filters are specific to the folder i am currently in?

It's "sticky" to the "container", the folder or collection as you've found. Try using Smart Collections instead.

Well, now ain't that dumb.

I think my point here is i have to go to the left panel of the library module to change the folder or look in the smart collection. I thought the point of the filter bar leaving the left panel and moving to the top was to avoid this, every time i need to search for something.

This should be catalogue specific. At least in the filter bar there should be a short cut to the whole catologue.

Well, I make almost no use of the filter panel and use smart and dumb collections all the time, the Target collection too. I also wonder if you aren't making use of the most recently visited "containers" on the left of filmstrip.

Brad, I've already put in a request for a 'global' checkbox preference, to switch the filters from folder/collection specific to a global setting. Put in a request too, if it's something you'd like to see.

yes i do john.

but this is limited to the most recent.

In fact you raise a good point about that specific area on the film strip. I see that to be a good place for a 'mini' folder tree to be available. Why limit it to just the most recent?

And....

If i want to search for anything in LR, i should have to set ALL parameters to be searched in the filter bar.

2.' introduced the filter bar, with all metadata filtering moved away from the left panel precisely for this reason. Kinda defeats its own purpose if i have to go back to the left panel to set the 1st parameter of the search.

No, use a Smart Collection instead. The chances are that if you search for something once, you know what you are looking for, will want to search for it again, and will probably use it for some sort of output, print, slideshow or web. When you know what you're doing, use Smart Collections, but when you're exploring blind and chopping and changing what you're looking for as you see what's there, then use the Filter panel - and perhaps also use it for very temporary filtering.

But, first i have to go back to the left panel to set the 1st parameter of the search (the catalogue vs the folder)....precisely my point.

Also, i understande what smart collections are for, however, I can not create a smart collection for every permutation and combination that my brain would like to search for on any given day, come on!

I do and have been doing so for months. I'm always in the left panel.

Save a few SC presets externally - makes creating new ones a dream

That's a very good question.

John

And that's what I mean about temporary use. When I was really trying to love the filter panel, I was always going back to a folder or collection and wondering why I wasn't seeing some pictures which I knew were there. After a few disconcerting moments I would realize that I must have applied a filter, days or weeks before. Now I try to remember to click None in the panel after each session, but I'd love a "kill all filters in catalogue" command.

John

"In LR2 when you go back to a previous collection it opens with the filters set the same way as they were when you left."
Which is exactly what's irritating me! It's OK during a session, but not days or weeks later.

John

I wouldn't want them to remove the current behaviour - just add a menu command that says "wipe all filters".

Agree with you here John. This would be ideal.

Moreover, as would a command in the filter that reverts one back to the whole catalogue and not just the folder/collections you are currently in.:)

I agree, Brad -- I kept getting bitten all weekend by trying to find stuff, forgetting that I had to select "All Photographs" first. Sure would be nice to have a shortcut to All Photographs...

And its only for the most recent folder you have been working on, not all folders. If that drop down arrow could contain "All Photographs" - that would work.

Although i thinks its place belongs in the filter bar somewhere.
