L2 Keywording a batch; only keywords first image when using 2nd monitor

Today I was keywording batches of images that were missing keywords and appeared in a Smart Collection of images with no keywords.

As soon as I entered some keywords for a string of images, they would disappear from the grid (no longer qualified for the Smart Collection).

Then, as I keyworded more strings of images, only the first image of the string would disappear. I felt I'd hit some key by accident, but couldn't find any reason for the change.

I had turned on 2nd monitor. When I turned it off, my keywording of all images in a selected group "took" and they disappeared from the Smart Collection.

Seems to be some kind of bug logic.

That's happening because "Grid" mode on the 2nd monitor really isn't. It behaves as an extended film strip rather than as the true grid view you get on the primary monitor. And you can't apply multiple keywords, or flags, or ratings, etc. to multiple selected images in the film strip. You have to be in grid mode-- and on the primary monitor -- to apply things to all selected images.

I assume you mean the grid was on the secondary monitor; as opposed to using the grid on the primary monitor, with a loupe or something enabled on the secondary. I use the second situation all the time, and multiple keywording etc works fine that way for me.
(I can read the OP as being either situation, can't tell for sure which)

I just experimented with the grid on the secondary monitor, and found:
Can change multiple: flags, colors, ratings
Can't change multiple: keywords, other text base fields in metadata

So, for me, it seems to be halfway between the grid and the filmstrip.

That certainly isn't my experience on the Mac version. If the "grid" is displayed on the monitor without the side panels, then only the most selected image gets ratings, labels and such applied.

Crap, it's even weirder than that. Put the grid on the secondary monitor (as you said, the one without any side panels).
In my grid view on the secondary display, I can see the star rating, color label and pick flag icons on each thumbnai;. I don't know if that view is menu selectable or not, but anyway, I can see them.

Select several images.
Press numpad 5. See the most selected rating show 5 stars. Reset to previous rating #.
Click the 5th star on the most selected, see all the images show 5 stars. Reset rating
Click the 5th star on any selected image, see all the selected images change.

The same applies to clicking on the flags, the color label chip, and the rotation arrows.
If I use the shortcut keys ('-9, P,U,X) it works as you say. If I use the main menu options, it works as you say. If I click on the thumbnail icons, it applies to all selected.

What do you see on Mac, if you try that? I'm XP/SP3 as per sig.

I've been trying this using the keyboard shortcuts. I tried your tests and the Mac behaves the same as you describe. And your tests reminded me of a thread on the U2U forum:

In this discussion Ian Lyons explained the behavior is controlled by 'focus' -- keyboard focus is apparently always on the primary display, mouse 'focus' (if there is such a thing) can be on the secondary display and therefore works like one would expect, i.e., the parameters are applied to all the selected images. Quite honestly, this is very confusing and is another one of those design decisions in LR that I just don't understand. Why would you design different behaviors using the mouse or the keyboard for the same function?

Perhaps, it wasn't so much a decision, as a failure to notice the difference. Despite hundreds of alpha testers, and tens of thousands (?) of beta testers, stuff still keeps coming up.

Jim and Brad, thanks for the feedback. Now that I know how LR2 behaves, I can work around this. It will bite someone else until there is a fix.... a warning (i.e. "2nd monitor is not really in Grid mode, you'll only keyword the first image in your selection") or the logic is re-examined and changed.
