i put lr1.4.1 on my laptop awhile back it has vista 64bit OS,in order to make it a dedicated photo machine.
my pc has windows xp, lr 1.4.1 as well........pretty much the same inventory of photos and roughly same keywording.....initially i took all my pc photos to the laptop and somehow imported those with vickies help into the laptop lr.
i then proceeded with the laptop version of lr 1.4.1 and actually keyworded each individual photo very specifically....is there anyway to now bring that very specific keywording to the same existing photos that are still on the pc version of lr?.....currently the difference between the two machines may be some very new photos may be on the laptop but not on the pc as i am wanting to do all photograpy on the laptop.......is that anykind if an issue if the pc has fewer photos than the laptop when i bring the laptop keywords over?..... is this operation done with integrating\updating key wording from one machine to the other by using the metadata menu and choosing export keywords? is that all you have to do then put that export on a transferring device like a flashdrive or external hd and importing it into the other machine by opening lr and selecting import keywords through the metadata menu.....thanks as always

The Import/Export Keywords is just that. Keywords alone and no link to images.

To help guiding you Craig, are the photos on the PC in the same folder structure as the ones on the laptop?

Oh, deja vu!

Are you going to continue using the laptop catalog, or will the desktop catalog now become the main catalog again?

Do you know which are the new photos on the laptop or not?

victoria, i know exactly what photos on the laptop are not on the desktop....my "plan" was to just update the pc to very specific keywords per same identical picture on laptop so as to have a legitimate point of restore should anything happen to my laptop

i suppose my next most logical question is this......what kind of backup do i need to do in order to have a complete backup of lightroom for restoration purposes..the backup preformed on opening of lr cataloge wont do it will it? have everything all inclusive i would need to do a complete replacement restore?

Fantastic! Ok, easy then.
Backup both catalogs first.
Copy the laptop catalog onto the desktop machine.
Copy the new photos from the laptop in their same relative locations.
With your desktop catalog open, go to File > Import from Catalog and point to the laptop catalog.
Set it to 'replace metadata'. That'll update existing photos in the existing desktop catalog and import new ones.

That said, in answer to your backup question, you want to back up the catalog (*.lrcat - which LR's backup will back up), the photos ideally in their same folder structure, your presets, and possibly your preferences if you're really going the whole way.

This is what I just wrote. Short answer: NO

For all the rest, Victoria said exactly what I was about to suggest. Nice thing the structure is the same on both. Glad you are sorted.
