Keywords with other editors than CS3

I use CS3 to custom tweak my best, and DxO-labs to "mass-produce" Raw files. Until now I have set my keywords AFTER the DxO treatment - but that means I have to set keywords for two sets of the same pictures: the RAW-files and my DxO-JPEGs. Is it possible to "hardwire" the keywords in my RAW-files in Lightroom so they "survive" further treatment from other editors than Adobe´s"?

I have seen there is a save to file keyword option somewhere, but I am not sure what it implies for other programes than Lightroom itself.

I really need to streamline my workflow, so any help is very much appreciated.

The save to file option just produces a formatted text file of your keyword list, principallly for moving keyword lists around between catalogs. Editing with an external text editor and reimporting can be quicker than fooling around with Lr's menus as well.

You're shooting raw? The edit-in CS3 command should retain the keywords you've applied in Lr when sending to CS3. I don't use DxO, how do send the files to it?

Regardless, I believe keywording the raws first in Lr, will forward the keywords to subsequent apps, depending on your exact filetype workflow.

I am shooting RAW exclusively.

Keywording my RAW-files does not seem to work. If I just convert my files in DxO (to jpg), the keywords are "lost" when I look at the resulting jpg's in Lightroom afterwards

Of course if I just edit in CS3 there are no problems.

Somehow I would think that there was a way to embed the keywords in the RAW-files just like the camera setting info etc. can be retrieved at any time. :?:

I believe that it is Adobe policy at present to allow nothing to be written to a native raw file with the exception of altering the capture time.

How do the images get to DxO from Lr? I'm speculating it can't be just raw files, or the Lr adjustments wouldn't transfer. If it's not just the raw files, then the metadata should be there somewhere.

As Geoff says, writing to raw files is not a good idea. They are almost always an undocumented manufacturer's proprietary file type, and while you can 'read' them and make intelligent guesses about the content, it's dangerous to go inserting stuff. And for long-debated reasons, the manufacturers don't always level the playing field with third party software developers.

DXO will take linear DNG files, won't it? They would be quite a lot bigger, but you could use them as an interim file and see if DXO will keep the keywords. I'm thinking along the lines of import your raw files as normal, and then export to DNG for DXO. I haven't tried it, but it might be worth a shot if you're up for experimenting.

I have thought about the problem and will try to ask DxO first why the DxO program seems to discard the Lightroom keywords.

I transfer the RAW files from Lightroom to DxO via a plug-in. I am not sure if Lightroom is actually sending the RAW file itself or a tiff copy or something else. I'll try to investigate this too.

I'll be back when I (hopefully) get a reply from the DxO team.

I have thought about the problem and will try to ask DxO first why the DxO program seems to discard the Lightroom keywords.

"Thank you for writing. The issue here is that your keywords are stored in a sidecar file by Lightroom that LR should re-associated once processing is completed in Optics Pro. We have found that under some instances, this re-association is not working properly on some computers. We are investigating this issue. We have confirmed that LR does work properly with other Adobe programs (non-third party)."

I'll wait and see if they come up with a fix.

Hmmm, using an expendable sample image, try:

Import the raw to Lr.
Keyword/Adjust
Ctrl/Cmd-S to write the XMP sidecar
Send to DxO, manipulate, return
Check keywords, if lost, then try:
In Library, right-click, on drop down menu, click Metadata > , and then Read Metadata from file. See if that fixes it. If not, I'm out of ideas, have to wait for DxO.
