Just downloaded v2.5 and installed, then started LR and noticed that many hundreds of my newer images are missing keywords & ratings, but not all of the older images. However, it looks like all of the images are missing the color label I assigned to them.

I've searched the forum to see if others had this problem when upgrading but haven't found an answer that might help my situation. I'd appreciate any help to restore the photos as they were so as not to spend the next week & a half re-assigning all the lost info. :(

Thank you all!

Make sure you are opening the correct catalog and not an earlier one. Maybe 2.5 is looking in the default folder and you have an older copy there.

Hi alty, welcome to the forum!

Apart from Nik's great suggestion, I'd also check in the Metadata panel, and see if the label field has a title - if it does, check the Metadata menu > Color Label Set as you may be showing a different set. I'm guessing Nik is probably right about your missing keywords and ratings, so search for a *.lrcat file hiding somewhere.

OK, I searched for the catalog files and there are a few *.lrcat files located in the backup folder as well as in My Documents > My Pictures folder. I opened two or three catalogs and have the same symptoms with each, that being only some of my images show the star rating intact but none of my color labels are. And many images don't show edit/keyword tags when they should. The keyword list still has a lot of my keywords there but some of them are missing and a few were out of place.

Is there anything else I can do to try and restore the missing info? I'm starting to sweat at the thought of a do-over with thousands of images!

By the way, what folder is the default location for the catalog?

Thanks again.

I'm not sure where the default is on Windows (someone will chime in). I would run the search for the catalog files and then order by date and see which is the most recent. (if you have opened some though they may have the timestamp updated already)

On Windows XP, the Default Catalog is:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Pictures\Lightroom\Lightroom 2 Catalog.lrcat

On Vista, it probably would be C:\Users\username\Pictures\Lightroom\....., but I'm not sure. Note that C:\Users.. might be a hidden folder.

Hi, I had the same experience when I upgraded to 2.5 yesterday. In this case, the 3 folders that I had worked on most recently were missing all of their metadata. I also noticed on the most recent folder that the metadata tag in Library module said that there was a discrepancy. So I selected all the photos in that folder and told it to fix them by copying from the disk. Fixed the problem in that folder.

Like the OP, I'm a bit spooked by this as I don't know how to ascertain what else is missing. In my case, it is definitely not a case of opening the wrong catalog; this is the only catalog I have on this system. I'm not worried about losing any data as I have the same images and recent catalog on another computer that I have not yet upgraded to 2.5. However, I am concerned about upgrading that machine. Think I'll wait a bit until someone gets a handle on the problem. Just wanted the OP to know that he's not alone and he's not imagining the problem. Any ideas other than opening an old catalog?

That does sound a little odd. Bruce, did LR run a backup before upgrading to 2.5? If so, does the backup contain the missing data?

I'm not sure. Here's the sequence, as far as I can remember. The work on the folders in question was done on my other system (computer #1) under 2.4. Before I changed locations, I copied the image files and the current catalog to external drives. When I arrived at this location (computer #2), I copied the image files and catalog from the external drive. I then opened LR on computer #2 under LR 2.4 to be sure everything was OK. Didn't notice anything amiss. Let LR generate previews for a couple folders that were current (I don't copy the previews when I transfer between computers). Closed LR. The next day, I decided to upgrade to 2.5. Ran the upgrade w/o incident. After the upgrade, I opened LR 2.5 and immediately noticed the missing metadata on the current folder. Checked a couple others and realized it was only an issue on the folders I had worked on most recently. As a test, I allowed LR to reconcile one folder by copying from disk to the catalog. That worked successfully. That's where I am at present.

I'm traveling back to the location of Computer #1 today, so I can check the backups there to see if a backup had been run between the time that I worked on the folders and the upgrade. My concern at the moment is that I have no way to know whether there is other metadata missing in other folders short of opening each one and checking every image. That would be entirely too tedious. So, now the quandry about whether or not to upgrade computer #1. As it's running 2.4 just fine, perhaps I'll wait. However, if I don't upgrade computer #1, I'll wind up having to take computer #2 back to 2.4 to maintain compatibility.

Oh, just occurred to me that maybe I haven't answered your question. On the computer that I upgraded (#2) LR did not create a backup before the upgrade. The catalog in question contained the missing data when opened in 2.4, but did not contain the data when opened in 2.5.

Any opinions, theories, suggestions appreciated. Thanks,

Yeah, I'd be interested to know if computer #1 has the right data on it, and we'll go from there.

Yes, this was the same catalog used the first time v2.5 was used after upgrading.

Can I re-install v2.4 to see if it will read the images correctly without having to uninstall v2.5, or can only one version be installed at a time?

added: I noticed today that my metadata presets are gone, too. I had to re-create the one I use to change the filename and add copyright info when importing.

OK, now I'm totally confused. I'm back to computer #1, still running LR 2.4. This computer has not been turned on since I left here on Tuesday. At that time, I had completed working on a folder of images, including some develop work and cropping. I made a collection of the images, deleted some from the collection, then exported the images to jpgs for email from the collection. Then, closed LR, copied images and catalog to an external drive, shut off computer and went away. Now, I'm back. Start up LR and discover that the metadata is not shown in that folder, and the collection is missing from the catalog.

So, apparently this has nothing to do w/ upgrading to 2.5. Now, I'm even more worried than before. Somehow, LR has managed to lose some of my work in the catalog. The information still exists in the xmp files, and I have lots of backups, but I seem to have lost the new collection entirely. This is very annoying. Appreciate any ideas,

This kind of catalog state confusion frequently arises when you accidentally open a different catalog file. (Lr is not a huge help in administering that). Particularly insidious is opening a backup catalog to verify/restore something. Depending on your preference settings, that can easily become the 'open by default' catalog.

Check:
1) File > Open Recent... and see if any extra catalogs are hiding there.
2) Search your hard drives for files of type *.lrcat and see if you can identify any 'strangers'

If that's no help, let us know what you found.

Nope. Checking for opening a wrong catalog is the first thing I checked. There are only two catalogs in my recent list, the one I normally work from and another w/ a completely different name that I maintain for another person. Went to the main catalog on the hard disk and opened LR by double-clicking on the catalog file and it's still missing the metadata and the collection. A search of the system for *.lrcat only turned up the expected catalogs and backups. Other ideas?
