Keywords in Lightroom 2

I have a question about applying keywords to images in Lightroom 2.

First, I have nested keywords in the keyword list such as:

Locations
>>>Canada
>>>United States
>>>>>>Pennsylvania
>>>>>>>>>Wayne County
>>>>>>>>>>>>Keen Lake
>>>>>>>>>>>>Yanders
>>>>>>>>>>>>Honesdale

You get the idea. What I would like is to individually click on : United States, Pennsylvania,Wayne County,Keen Lake and have four separate keywords.

But what I get is a linked set of keywords Locations>United States>Pennsylvania>Wayne County>Keen Lake and this entire string exports to SmuMug, for example, and then I have to modify the keywords because Location is not of much use and I need to break up the string.

Any suggestions on how to do this better or what I am missing?

The first problem is fairly easy. Right-click on the 'Locations' keyword and select, "Edit keyword tag". On the pop-up window, uncheck "Include on Export". You should probably do this with all of your top-level keywords.

Can't help much with the second problem, as I don't use SmugMug. But, I might suggest that you consider using the IPTC tags that are already designated for location information (Country, State/Province, City, Location). Cheers,

If you have an hierarchy like you've shown, you click on Keen Lake but all you see in the keywords tag box is Keen Lake. However, the whole thing is there and will go to smugmug if you leave unchecked Minimize metadata and Write lightroom hierarchy on export And if you have the export boxes checked in the other keywords. What will go you can see by changing the mode of the keyword tags box from enter keywords to will export -- click on the double arrow on the right of the keyword tags header.

There is a disconnect between Lightroom and Smugmug keywords, however. Keen Lake will be in Lightroom as a single keyword, but when it gets to Smugmug it will become two keywords since they use space delimited keywords instead of commas. You'd have to have "Keen Lake" in Lightroom to get it to come out as a single keyword in Smugmug. The quotes will carry across.

I made a little hierarchy for a spider picture and tried to duplicate getting Animal>wild>insect>spider to come out in smugmug, but it didn't work, perhaps because I'm using the smugmug plugin which knows I don't want that kind of string. In any case, make sure the export lightroom hierachy is turned off. It will still export all the words in the hierarchy, it just won't export the structure along with it.
