hi,
i have a photo in a collection. it also has several keywords.
if i use the keyword search to find a photo, is there any way to know what collection/s it might be in?
The closest you can get is after you have found your image(s) hover your mouse over the collections individually and if the image(s) is in the collection a white border will appear around the image.
Of course, this is somewhat useless if you have found more images than your screen will show at once. And if you have lots of collections then it takes a little more mouse control than should be necessary to find out what it is you want to know.
The alternative is to decide which collection the image(s) should be in and drag it/them in to the collection. If the image is already in the collection nothing will happen.
I've been pondering on this for the last few days as I'm sifting through my years of photos to make collections for the family web. David is right in that the options he mentions are the help we have right now from Lightroom and they are far from ideal.
One thought I had was to add the collection name as a keyword or perhaps keep it in the IPTC Workflow Job identifier field. Use something unique like 'Col_collectionname'. Not perfect as you would have to remember to change that data if you moved photos to a new collection or rename a collection but it should work _most_ of the time.
Be careful if using other IPTC fields; they are not all searched during a find.
hello my new friends (just logged in).
When I make a keyword find, the results are also shown on the folder list and the keyword list. Both lists show numbers like '/34 (=zero match/34 photos on that folder or keyword group). Also those that have zero match are greyed. If I want to see which photos are on one of those folders showing non-zero numbers like 4/56, I can just click on that line (still keeping the find active).
this applies on version 1.3, not sure about earlier versions.
Does this help or am I too late?
Unfortunately, the find results that are indicated in both the folder and keyword browser, as you indicated, do *Not* show up that way in the *collection* browser. That was the first thing I thought of as well, and a few small experiments show that it doesn't work with collections. And spotodog asked specifically about collections.
Welcome aboard, thanks for the input. FYI, the forum specifically asks that you create a signature, with details about your computer, OS, LR and imaging s/w, and camera gear. We all come from such varied backgrounds, it helps everybody separate the apples from the oranges . At top left, click User CP and then click Edit Signature.
Brad, did a retest with collections. Here is a screen capture from my computer. I have searched keyword "joutsen" (a swan). there is 74 matches as total and 13 of them are in the collection "luontokuvia" (nature photos) which I have chosen to see the pics.
Great, that's how it oughta' work. It just didn't seem to when I tried it. I'll have another go.

I tried again, and get the same results you did. I wasn't looking at the image counts, I was looking for a reverse highlight or checkmarks, the way LR displays "membership" with the Keyword browser.
