keywording- including parent keyword when keywording with child tags.

I have a hiearchical keyword list. I want to be able to keyword on the "child" keyword, and have the parent keyword included automatically. In the edit keyword dialog I have all options clicked (include, export containing, export syns), yet when I click on "Christmas", it's parent, "Holiday", does not paste into the file...

Where are you looking for Holiday? In the exported file or within LR's own interface?

Another way to put it is that Holiday is implicitly applied by applying its children, and so there's no need to assign it independently of Christmas. In LR, searching for Holiday will give you those which have Christmas applied. When you export, Holiday will be there too.

Take a look at the Keywording panel and the Will Export view.

As John and Victoria both allude to, there will be a difference between the keywords 'embedded' in a Lr original image file (or sidecar) via the save-metadata (XMP) function, and those embedded in an exported file. The former is for Lr's internal usage, and as John says, Lr knows what to do. The latter is (obviously) for external consumption, and should behave in accordance with the Export/Don't Export rules you've established in the keyword tags options. We've been told that in the event of conflicting rules, e.g. Don't export parent, but parent is marked export, the preference will be to export.

Hummmm... :icon_neutral: OK. I thought I read something about that. I'm not sure I agree with it though. I wonder what the thought was behind not showing a parent keyword in LR? To save space in the keywording window??

Personally I prefer WYSIWYG to "implied" sort of set ups. I want to see for myself that those parents are included... Hmm... Well, thanks for answering my question, which you did clearly do :icon_idea:
