Keywording images in an "Unkeyworded" smart collection

I have a smart collection, containing all picked images, not yet keyworded. (Keywords are empty). Now, I find it quicker to first add a few basic keywords that apply to all the photos in this collection, and then go through image by image and add the keywords distinct to those specific shots. Now, I am sure you can already see where this goes wrong. As soon as I add the first of the basic keywords to the image, it dissapears from the smart collection, as it does not fit the filter anymore.

Has anyone found a way around this, or would there be a way to freeze the collection, or put the images in an edit mode or something? I currently use a quick collection to bypass this, but was hoping there would be something more impressive

Use the smart collection to act as a monitor of images which need work, then dump them into a dumb collection (save with similar name as SC so they are next to each other). Work through the dumb collection. As you decide you've finished keywording some images, remove from the dumb collection.

For exactly this reason, I've been asking for SCs to be refreshed upon request rather than this totally automatic approach.

What I do is create 1 dumb collection, 2 smart collections, and then use color labels to differenciate between 'images with finished keywords' and 'images with almost finished keywords'.

I put all the images in the dumb collection. The first smart collection points to the dumb collection and looks for images with no color label. And the second smart collection also points to the dumb collection but looks for images with a red color label.

And then i just go through my images and when i finish keywording them, I give them a red color label. By using smart collections and color labels, I can automatically see how many images I still need to finish keywording and how many images I already finished.

Okay, time to jump in here with what might be a silly question. What's the basic difference between a Smart collection, and just a collection?

...What's the basic difference between a Smart collection, and just a collection?

Hi Joe!

A regular collection is created by choosing images and putting them in the collection. A Smart Collection is created by LR based upon a set of filter conditions you specify. If an image no longer meets the set of conditions it disappears from that Smart Collection. If you want an image to no longer be in a regular collection you have to remove it manually.

It's very similar to the difference between a playlist and a smart playlist in iTunes.
