Solved: Keyword Tags Panel Stops at "S"

Hello Everyone,

This problem didn't come up in any forum searches, hopefully I have not overlooked a post...

Our 'Keyword Tags Panel' sometimes goes all the way to "Z", but much of the time it will only display to "S" -or somewhere around it. It seems to happen at random, purging and/or synchronizing does not help. Short of starting a new catalog, I am at a loss.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the great explanations! We'll just have to refine our keywording down to 16'' if we want to make use of that panel.

This is a known problem affecting LR on Windows. The keywords are there - it's just the list can only display about 16'' lines.

And it not only affecting Lightroom. For example, Item lists under Microsoft Access for Windows suffer from the same limitation... The fact that it doesn't alway stop at 'S' is probably because you have some parent keywords collapsed or not. Just making a guess here... Is this the case?

It's purely a Lightroom coding issue affecting Windows. The key is apparently a limitation on the size of a single Windows control or object to 32''' pixels - divide that by 2' pixels per keyword and you get to the 16''. While there may indeed be similar behaviours in other apps, they're not terribly relevant nor do they provide any excuse. After all, plenty of other Windows applications' lists or tables do comfortably exceed 16'' or so items....

Filtering the LR keywords (at the top of the keywords panel) can reveal items after the 16''th one, as can hierarchical organization.

Although, unfortunately, filtering for a parent hierarchal keyword won't necessarily reveal the child keywords, (unless they also meet the filter criteria individually.)

As John says, the intended usage here is hierarchal organization, so that there are fewer than 16'' top-level keywords. Some folks use a system as simple as top level keywords of A,B,C thru Z, Numbers, Symbols.

Thanks for the input Denis. Unfortunately it's not a matter of the panel being collapsed. It sounds like it must be the Windows limitation... I'm already torqued about the 3GB RAM limit in XP 32bit, now this, I may just look into a whole different OS.

Cheers John, I am sure this is the problem. Not the answer I wanted to hear but now I understand the issue. This is brand new info to me. Thank you!

Seeing that nobody mentioned it, I will assume that this has NOT been corrected in later versions of Lightroom.

Thanks Brad, what a great resource this forum has turned into.

Our keywords can absolutely be refined. I've been so devoted to developing a good folder hierarchy that keywords were neglected.
