Keyword Sets vs Nested KeyWords

I am not a professional photographer. I create nested keywords putting family members into their respective families. If I create a keyword set for each family it seems I am doing the same thing. Is there an advantage to a keyword set that using nested keywords does not provide?

Doug, the keyword set is just a User Interface tool, that really has nothing to do with 'organizing' the keyword structure. It displays nine or fewer keywords into a shortcut arrangement, such that when you hold down the alt key, numeric digits are displayed beside the keywords in the open set, in a 1-9 layout matching the numeric keypad. So that adding single keywords from the set is as simple as alt-numpad1.

Continue with the Doug > Mace > family, Susie > Smith > family structure for the keyword list, and use Keyword Sets to speed application of keywords.

Sometimes I have seen nested keywords seperated with commas like Mace's. Doug and sometimes with > like Mace's>Doug. Can someone explain why this happens?

If you have the same word in two different places in the keyword hierarchy, Lightroom will present them as "Foo > Bar" and "Frotz > Bar", so that you can tell them apart.

If you enter a keyword from a keyword set that you have not entered in the keyword list, how do you search on it. The keyword appears in the keyword tags box, but it does not appear in the list so I cannot retrieve these images.

I did retrieve them using a text search so they must go somewhere, but not in the keyword list.

I think that the keyword was created in your keyword list but it may be located at a place you don't expect. Look for a little dot at the right of one of the keywords, it may be located just underneath that one. The dot mean to add new keywords under that one. Or it may lurk elsewhere in your list. First option under the Keywords panel is a magnifier with a search box. Try to put that new keyword there to find...
