Kernel Panic and LR 2.2 Quitting Unexpectedly

I am new here. I love LR. I have a G5 with dual 2 GHz processors with 3.5G of memory.

Over the weekend while importing images I had a kernel panic. My catalogue became corrupted and LR 2.2 could not repair it. Time Machine saved me as I had a catalogue there was from about 1 hour earlier.

Yesterday LR 2.2 quit unexpectedly but everything afterwards was okay.

When I switch from Library to Develop for the first time I get a spinning beach ball and it takes a while. After that it moves faster.

I would like to know if any of these are known bugs with LR 2.2. I also wonder if my system is too slow to run LR optimally. The images I work with mainly are from a Canon 5'D -- the typical file size of the CR2 images is 19 or 2'MB.

I am about ready for a new Mac but I would hate to buy one only to have the same problem. I am trying to figure out how stable and trustworthy LR is at this point in its development and would love to hear the experiences of other users.

Not a Mac guy, but the mode switch beach ball is reportedly a symptom of the 2.2 bugs.

I question the use of Time Machine, which is known to have a conflict with Lr in the event of an open catalog during backup, including catalog corruption. So maybe that was the cause and the cure?

Unexpected quit, don't know.

On Windows, I find 2.2 a little sluggish, but have not encountered the 'show-stoppers' that others are reporting.

Yep, the beachballs sounds like the memory bug. You could switch back to 2.1 for the moment.

LR is stable & trustworthy enough for me to use it for thousands of photos each week, but it does love good hardware. If you're buying a new Mac, throw plenty of RAM in it and LR will love you for it. By all accounts, it's much faster on Intel.

Unexpected quit is pretty unusual on the Mac version - was TM backing up at that moment, by any chance? There are known conflicts, as Brad said, so exclude the catalog and use other backup software to run when it's closed if possible.

Thank you Brad and Victoria. I didn't know about excluding the LR catalogue from TM back ups but will make that change.

I will get a new Mac soon. Any recommendations on how much memory? I was thinking of 6 or 8 GB.

The more the merrier when it comes to RAM these days dclaywer, particularly when dealing with such big file sizes. They'll only continue to grow, and programs will continue to get hungrier, so it's a good investment.
