is there a way for a little jpg thumbnail (or larger) to show up when i look at my raw images using windows explorer?

is it a program or plugin?

i'm using winXP pro SP3

Don't you now need a Codec?

like a RAW codec?

i thought there was an installer that would automatically show a small or large thumbnail when looking at RAWs in windows explorer?

I use Microsoft's "RAW thumnail viewer" downloadable from the MS website. Just do a search for "RAW Thumnail viewer".

Simple as that. Shows my NEFs in Explorer. I'm also on XP SP3.

thanks, will look into both your suggestions!! much appreciated!

The microsoft viewer I had did not update past the 4'D for Canon and, last I heard, MS was not going to update it since Vista was coming out. So I downloaded Faststone, a free viewer which does all sorts of things. Even renames files much easier than Lightroom IMO.

I'm reasonably happy with
ARcsoft's Raw Viewer

DPMagic was fine too, but Arcsoft's is free.

I found the problem with MS's Raw Viewer was a lack of updates to address new mfgr. formats, in my case, CRWs worked, CR2s did not.

The architecture is different on Vista, and I haven't played with it much. As John said that requires a Codec from the mfgr.

I've installed it, but all it does is show my RAW CR2 files as rectangles, no thumbnail view. The rectangles have the little Xnview colors on them, it might be something with that. No big deal though, I have Breeze Browser Pro, it's a fantastic viewer. (albeit not free), I use it for making web galleries.

the microsuck RAW image viewer worked great!
thanks for that!

silly me though, i already had softstones image viewer, only tried it now which is another good RAW viewer! i like it slightly better as you can adjust the thumbnail size plus many more options.

thanks again everyone!
