Hi, anyone know why LrC has duplicated images in a folder of jpgs with .jpg.lrbak file extensions? Assuming it’s to do with a backup but even searches aren’t recognising this file name!
I’ve used this sites information on merging two catalogs and I think I asked for duplicates to be kept as virtual copies, the folder is of my son’s wedding so I have got images saved on both MacBook and the external HD where these .lrbak files appeared.

Also is there any way to search this forum for answers to my questions as I don’t see a search box. Many thanks

Not sure on your file extension question, but the Search is at the top of the screen:

I believe these are temporary files that Lr Created and somehow were not deleted when LrC was finished. Perhaps that OS crashed with Lr Running or you dod not properly exit LrC.

Perhaps "make 2nd copy to" utilized during import and the destination folder for the 2nd copy is the same as where the master photos are? - just an idea.

"Second copy" is just that a copy of the JPEG to another folder. No temporary files are created for "Second Copy".

"LrBac" is typically only used forcatalog backups (according to Windows Co-pilot), not for image files.

Thinking out loud:
What could append ".lrbak" to a jpg file name?
i would assume that it is some process that for one reason or another has to make a copy of the JPG file probably as a temporary file to revert to if something goes haywire.

So, what process would need to do that?
Writing XMP to non RAW files requires the creation of a new JPG file, so perhaps it creates a temporary version of the file just in case the creation of the new JPG fails?

What else would require a temporary copy of an image file?
Maybe moving the file to another folder could create a temp copy as a fall back? But I would think it would use the OS "Move" command for this which would be far fetched to use "LrBac" in the temporary file name.

What else?
Handing off the image to an external editor might want to save a backup copy. Not likely but possible

Could a plug in maybe be involved in this somehow?

Maybe a file renaming template used during export may be adding this extension?

I'm sort of liking the last one if the user inadvertantly selected an export preset, perhaps one created by some obscure plugi, that had a renaming template in it. but not really coming up with anything likely.
