Jpegs imported instead of raw files

Background: I used RawShooter Premium from the time I converted to a raw workflow in 2''5, until I got my license for Lightroom. At that time, I imported all of my existing images into the catalog. As I've been taking new pictures, I keyword them during import, but my 'legacy' images had no keywords.

This week I started adding keywords to all of those older, imported images, and I got about two years into my raw-only images when I realized that many of the images in the catalogs were jpegs, not the original raw files. The jpegs are from the default "converted" subfolder that RSP created when I generated jpegs for various uses. Apparently, LR considered the raw images the duplicates, and preferred to import the jpegs instead, anytime both existed.

So I have two challenges: I need to import all of the raw files, either instead of, or in addition to the existing jpegs, without also re-importing a second copy of those same jpegs. I also need to apply keywords to all of the currently missing raw files.

I've tried to figure out a clever solution, searched here, and googled, but have not found a great solution.
The only thing I think I can do is remove all of the jpegs in the time range in question, and re-import, but it's not obvious to me that I'll get different results. I hope that if I check the 'treat jpegs next to raw files...' setting, I will get both the raw and jpegs imported? I'm assuming I'll have to manually re-keyword all of the raw files for that period.

Any brilliant ideas on the keywording? Is there a way to force LR to only import raw files when it sees both?

Hi dbump, welcome to the forum!

That's a new one on me - I've only ever seen LR pick the raw file and add the Jpeg as a sidecar, not the other way round.

So initial question - are the raw files in the same folder as the jpegs?

Have not checked. Is the G6 a supported RAW. if not, LR would take only the JPEGs.

Victoria,
Thank you--the forum is a great resource!

The raw and jpeg files are not in the same folder. The jpegs are in a subfolder.
So for example, if I'd captured 3 raw images on December 31st, 2''6, and only processed one (#3''1 in this example) of three raw images, and saved it as a jpeg using RawShooter, back in ancient times, my folder structure would resemble this:
...\12-31-2''6\CRW_3'''.crw
...\12-31-2''6\CRW_3''1.crw
...\12-31-2''6\CRW_3''2.crw
...\12-31-2''6\Converted\CRW_3''1.jpeg

That was the default location for saving processed files in RawShooter.

Don,
The G6 is definitely supported. Most of my raw images from 2''5-2''7 (and all of them after migrating to Lightroom) are in the catalog. The only exceptions are those images that I had previously processed in RawShooter, and therefore had a jpeg image with the same filename (and different extension) in a subfolder. So using the above example, in the catalog, I'd see the following files:
CRW_3''1.crw
CRW_3''1.jpeg
CRW_3''2.crw

Just a shot in the dark on your problem. :)

Just thinking out of the box.

Earlier versions of LR including the beta did not recognize files by the extension e.g. .crw, .jpg .tiff etc so that files with the same name were treated as duplicate files and not imported. Subsequent versions maybe as early as v 1.1 or 1.2 you were allowed "AT IMPORT", to treat raw and jpegs as separate files. Somehow I believe LR only does this if you are importing the raw/jpeg from the same folder at the same time.
I think this is what has created the problem you now experience. The solution may be to change the name of the jpegs or raws so that LR recognizes them as different files.

Denis,
Thanks for the suggestion! I definitely imported all of the original images with 1.', so that could explain it. I like your idea of renaming. I'm going to have to dust off 1-4a rename, and see if it's up to the task.

I wanted to list my solution, since I hate searching for a problem, finding someone else with the exact same issue, but no solution.

Pretty simple, really--after testing in a separate catalog, and after backing up my main catalog, I just chose 'import from disk', picked my 2''6 folder, and when I got the 'Problem with Importing Files' warning, I chose import instead of cancel. In the normal import window, I chose 'import photos from current location' and left the 'don't import suspected duplicates' checked. Repeat with remaining years. Note, that in Preferences, Import, I have checked the 'treat jpegs next to raw files...' option. That imported all of my missing raw files. So I think it must have been the way LR 1.' dealt with identical image names with different extensions?

I'm just manually keywording those files--fortunately, it's easy to identify them in the Previous Import selection.

Thanks for all of the ideas!
