I just got a new Dell Vostro desktop with Windows 7. I installed Lightroom and have had nothing but problems.
I tried to bring my presets over (followed the directions on Adobe help too) they are in the Preset folder, but are ignored by Lightroom. I am also missing most of the free develop settings preset that come preinstalled. And i can't move or rename files (which I set the UAC settings to never ask and I am the admin).
Anyone have any suggestions? Is this a Windows7 issue?

Hello, and welcome.

Couple of things to suggest:
1. Presets: by default when you installed Lightroom on your new desktop, all the LR settings are setup in a Folder with the path Users>username>AppData>Roaming>Adobe>Lightroom which will be on the drive containing the Windows OS (usually C:/). User Presets would be in a sub-folder of Develop Presets. When you say you 'brought them over', where did you put them? There is an option to alternatively store all the LR presets alongside the catalog, though by default this is not set. Might be worth checking, just in case Lightroom is looking there for the presets whereas you may have installed them elsewhere.

2. Unable to copy or rename almost certainly will be a permissions problem, even though you are the admin. When you setup your new desktop, did you copy your existing picture folders into an internal hard drive on the new PC, or are they on an external hard drive which you have simply plugged into the new PC? If the latter, it's a fair bet that because the picture folders were CREATED on a different OS (possibly also with a different user name) then it doesn't recognise your 'rights' as the new owner. This in fact happened to me, I could create new folders on a pre-existing hard drive with full control, but did not have read/write control over older folders even when under the same parent folder. Go figure! Easiest way to test this is to start Lightroom by right-clicking the desktop icon (or the entry in the Start Programs list) and choose "Run as Administrator", then try a move or rename. If it works, reset the permissions on the drive concerned, or remember the Run as Administrator trick...

So yes, partly a Win7 issue, but also maybe a setup problem as well...

This may be pointing at a slightly different issue... can you explain more about which default presets are missing?

Hi everyone, Thanks so much for your quick replies.
I didn't have time last night to implement any remedies, but I will try your suggestions tonight. It is my home computer.

@TNG:
I am coming from a Vista env. I found the user presets under develop preset on the Vista Laptop and transferred via flash drive to the same location on the Windows7 desktop. I didn't notice until my import and export presets were just not there. I checked the Path again and my transferred files were in there. So it seems like LR is looking to a different location or is ignoring the user preset folder. I have had my database set to store presets because I use the same database at work via ext hd.
The pictures and database are kept on the ext hd for use on all three machines although I'm phasing out the laptop. I did copy the files onto the new computer, but only for backup purposes. I still access the images on the ext hd through the LRdb.

Easiest way to test this is to start Lightroom by right-clicking the desktop icon (or the entry in the Start Programs list) and choose "Run as Administrator", then try a move or rename.
I will try this tonight.

@clee'1:
Thanks for your input, I'll check it out.

@Victoria:
Thanks!

I'm missing about half or all of the creative presets. I'm not positive, I'll check tonight.

Tom,

Thanks for filling in the gaps. Based on my first upgrade experience to Windows7 (from XP), I'm hopeful that your inability to rename/delete/move is a simple permissions problem and easily rectified.

The missing presets thing is a bit more of a story. The way LR works in relation to the storing of presets is as follows:

By default the presets are stored in the user settings folder (AppData in Windows7) on the same drive as the OS. Any presets that the user then creates, be it Metadata, Export, Develop get stored in the relevant set of sub-folders under the folder Roaming>Adobe>Lightroom. If, as you do, you use the SAME catalog and picture folders on one EHD and then share that environment on 2 or more computers, each with its own copy of the LR installation, then you would need to synchronise the settings across those computers, which generally can only be done by manual copies. Not an insurmountable problem, but definitely something the user would need to be aware of.

And so we come to the "Store presets with catalog" function, which on the surface gets around the problem of keeping the presets in sync, yes? Well not really.....the first time you change your preferences to select this option all that happens is that Lightroom will create a folder called Lightroom Settings in the same folder that contains the catalog....but it does NOT import the previously user-created presets from the User area. So the Lightroom Settings preset folders are initially empty, which gives the effect of existing presets 'disappearing' until such time as you manually copy your user presets into the relevant sub-folders. The problem is further exacerbated if you use multiple catalogs as "Store presets with catalog" is a general LR preference, NOT a catalog preference....so for every catalog, LR will create another set of (initially blank) Lightroom Settings folders and it will be down to the user to consolidate the presets as appropriate.

In your situation, if you are using the one catalog but shared across 2 or 3 computers then it makes perfect sense to have the presets stored with the catalog (BUT you MUST ensure that the "Store presets with catalog" option is checked on ALL of the computers). You just have to ensure that you have your presets properly consolidated into that Lightroom Settings folder which you should find alongside the catalog.....for now it sounds as if on the Windows 7 PC you have Lightroom looking in the wrong place for the presets, so you need to simply check that setting on each computer, get it the same on each, and make sure your actual presets are copied into the appropriate sub-folder in the Lightroom Settings folder alongside the catalog.

I really do hope that makes sense.....it might be worth having a look at this thread for some further discussion on this issue: http://www.lightroomqueen.com/community/index.php?topic=9447.msg63646#msg63646

Seem you understood the lesson pretty well TNG! :)

And things get worse if you change the language of Lightroom too!...
...as I explain in: Your presets dissapeared? Here is why!

Well well well, TNG. You were absolutely right. It was a rights issues on the db file. My work computer at work was not set to store presets. The only problem now is that it wants to store the presets from the Windows7 comp, which I don't want. What a mind tease, right?

Hi Tom, that's good news.

Not totally sure I understand the 'only problem', but it sounds like you just need to do a bit of preset consolidation. Most LR presets have a file type of *.lrtemplate, and they are in reality simply files that you can copy and paste from one set of Settings folders to another (just make sure you put them in the correct corresponding sub-folder).

Also, just remember that all that the 'Store presets with catalog' switch does is simply tell LR where to look for the presets, i.e. in the catalog folder, or in the default user-name application data area, and you can toggle that switch on and off within a Lightroom session should you wish to keep different presets in the two locations which you may want to access. I can't actually think of a reason for maintaining different sets presets in different locations, but that doesn't mean such a valid reason doesn't exist... :D

As Denis states in his post about missing presets, it's difficult to understand the thinking behind this particular option. It simply feels like a recipe for endless confusion.....or as Victoria said, a job half-done.
