I am using LR Classic (version) on 2yr old HP Spectre laptop using Windows 10. My photos are stored on external hard drive. My 1st HD had malfunction and I had to get photos professionally recovered and put onto new external HD. I lost about 15% photos (very random) that were not recoverable.

My issue:
In Windows, I can see the folder (2012-07) on my external hard driver and open it to see the 6 photos I want to link to LR.
From LRC, the same name of the sub-folder (2012-07) I created is greyed out and # pics is zero. Normally, I would right click on LRC folder 2012-07 and select “Update Folder Location”, then drill down to required folder on Windows external hard drive to link the photos. In this instance and a few others for the year 2019, the photos do not show up and I cannot link.

Any suggestions as to what this could be?

"Update Folder Location" would not be the correct tool in this case, as it does not "import" any images from the new target folder that have not already been imported. "Synchronize Folder" would be the better option, and that does perform an import of images in the folder that are not already in the catalog.

Jim,
That works for all but one sub-folder. I need to delve into it little more. Perhaps I have duplicates somewhere else that's confusing it.
Many thanks,
Nick Guise
