Is this possible to do with Lightroom?

So I have a bunch of NEF files that I want to embed into the DNG container. I'll rename the DNG file using a naming convention that I'm use to. Let's say in the future, that I want to move to a different naming convention. Would it be easy to rename the embedded NEF/CR2 files inside the DNG container?

Not really. Best to get your naming convention right now. If you change convention at some time in the future, leave your previous images as they are - after all, your backups would no longer match.

Mmmm, interesting question. I've never tried that - what name does the extracted NEF pick up when you extract it then? The original name or the current DNG name?

I'd like to know too!

One last thing, if I were to extract the NEF from the DNG files, would I be able to re-embed it later on? If so, how would I do that?

You give me a challenge like that, and I have to go test it.

Ok, the embedded file, at least through the DNG converter, keeps its original name, and renaming the DNG file has no effect on it.

Even if you extract the file, it remains embedded in the DNG file unless you reconvert to DNG with embed turned off.

But I'd have to emphasise my point about how it's best to get your naming convention right now, and not change in the future.

Thx for the test results.

So how did you reconvert to DNG with embed off? Can you do that with the DNG conversion program or you have to do it from Photoshop/LR?

You can do that with the DNG converter or by using the in-place conversion in LR.
