Sometimes I have several version of an image (virtual copies) and often I have to leave what I am doing before I finish so would like to be able to add notes to an image version to remind me what I was trying to achieve or what I was trying to achieve with a certaon version

Also sometimes I come back to an image to see there are five virtual copies and can't rmemeber why I made them , if only I could have appended notes

anyway to do this?

There are two fields in the EXIF that might suit your purpose. One is called "Job Identifier" and the other is called "Instructions" neither show up on the default Metadata panel. There is a metadata preset called "EXIF and IPTC" that does show these two fields.

sounds great thanks Cletus, but a little over my head
:)

That preset is a standard one and you set it here:
5 - Adobe Photoshop Lightroom - Library_2014-02-18_10-33-19.jpg

Then you can just scroll down in the Metadata panel to find the fields that Cletus mentioned.

In what way? Do you not understand the EXIF?IPTC metadata part or not understand how to show the fields in the metadata panel?

excuse me _ I have the Flu and my brain just isn't working
:)
